Our internet access is via MS Proxy Server through a ISDN router. Lately we have been getting huge phone bills. Look at the itemised bill it shows the ISDN line is constantly up and down all day and night. I can understand the line up during the day but all throughout the night, every 2 or 3 minutes when there is nobody working in the company or remotely connected just don't make sense to me. Looking at the Proxy logs its shows some machine throughout the night has been accessing web sites although nobody has been in the building!!!. Does anyone knows what is going on? do we have a problem with the proxy or why is this so?
Thanks
Al

Hello Al,

Maybe active caching? I would think that the Proxy would know not to
force an auto dial just to refresh its cache, but maybe not.

Hi,
I have the same problem with a new W2K network. I found some help in the
newsgroup. W95 and NT are doing broadcasts from the netbios. These
broadcasts initiate an outdial to the ISP.
By Zyxel under the following URL I found a filterset for blocking these
NetBIOS packets.
http://www.zyxel.com/doc/pst120/ap_note/common/filter/f_netb.htm

But it's not working on my W2K System :-( But I hope it helps for
your Problem.

Greetings Robert

Maybe it´s your exhange server causing the problem when it gets the mail every few minutes?

We had a similar problem, although no ISDN, just wierd access at odd hours, turned out some users had downloaded Real Player and it was in the systray of the offenders.  If you remember the freeware freason of the real player will send your listening habits to Real....  They were nice enough to set this to send at night though........!

Dunno about MSProxy, but with Wingate we simply tell it to close all
services, disconnect and go dormant from 7pm until 7am.

If you're talking MS Proxy 2.0, please make sure and check if you've
got caching enabled on the web proxy. If you do, there are settings
within that which keep links alive, and will continue to access these
overnight. Look at those settings under caching and you may find the
culprit. If you have any questions, let me know.
