Hello fellow Money users. I am here to ask for your help. I've just purchased a new computer (HP-Compaq Elite 8300) which is running Win 10 Pro, version 10.0.18363. I have tried to install Money Plus Sunset Deluxe version but when I try to restore the data files from my old computer which is running Win 10, I get an error message which tells me that the backup data files cannot be accessed due to having been created using another version of Money. Makes sense as the backup files were created using MS Money 2005, version I have the original install CD for 2005 BUT it requires a "Passport" which I don't have. I don't ever remember creating one when I installed the program way-back-when. I have already installed the .dll patch. I'm becoming stressed out about this as I have over 15 years of data. I did notice this morning that IE was missing so I added IE to the Money files as well but it didn't affect anything. I never have used any of the online features. I have always just used Money for my personal finances and I've really grown dependent on it. So, can anybody help this old confused Money user?

Kindest Regards and Happy Thanksgiving!

A Microsoft Passport was (and still is if it was not removed) a combination of email address and password. It was replaced by Microsoft’s Windows Live ID.

A Microsoft Passport cannot now be removed from your file because the online server that would need to authenticate the removal no longer exists. You will need to remember the email and password combination to access the Money data file on your new computer.

Your Money 2005 CD will not install an up-to-date version of Money 2005. You need the appropriate regional QFE2 installation file. See Download Microsoft Money Installation Files: Solve Activation and Some Other Errors . If you are not in the USA or Canada, Money Sunset cannot read your data file.

If you still have your old computer, you can export and transfer your data with the qif import/export procedure. Consider transferring your data to a newer, actively maintained program if you choose this method.

Add to my above request.... Quite by accident, I have found that my MS Money 2005, version, is a UK version. Does this change anything?

to Microsoft Money,
Just that you need the Money 2005 UK QFE2 file to install Money 2005.

The Microsoft Passport details will still need to be remembered.

Here's the link to UK version of Money 2005:
I doubt whether you have a Passport problem, just a faulty error message.  Install Money 2005.  If you have any problems come back for more help.

Thank you, thank you one and all for your thoughts and suggestions! IT (MS MONEY) LIVES AGAIN! This is terribly embarrassing, but I don't know exactly which path I used but it worked! I was getting very frustrated and stressed out but I'll try to give you the basics of what I did. First of all, from a post above, I used the UK version for which the installation file is Money2005-UK-QFE2.exe . The resulting Money was version which still didn't work past the request for a Password or Passport. And this is where it gets foggy. I had read somewhere to try opening using the Sample data. I fiddled and fussed with this and it finally started and I got a screen which was using the British monetary system (pounds ??). I remembered in the Settings help a section where I could change the currency settings so I set it to the US Dollar setting. Nothing happened. Still reading in pounds. So while it was operating, I set my backup preferences and shut it down to get another cup of coffee. When I started back up, it booted right into the program, although with the Sample data BUT it now read in US dollars! I was ecstatic! Then, I went ahead with the Restore from Backup function, using my data from my old computer which I had backed up onto a portable external hard drive. IT WORKED!! So, as I said, I don't know exactly what I did, but I'm back in service.

So, again, thanks to all for the links and information he shared!

I wish to all a Happy Thanksgiving and may you all have a covid-free future!

Kindest Regards,

Also, I would strongly recommend that you save a copy of the installation file.  You never know when that link may disappear
