Check if you have a money.lrd file and delete the file before restarting money

Hope this will help you.

Keep copies of all of the *.mny and *.mbf files that you have onto different media, such as a USB flash drive. An older backup may save you. This command in a command window is one way to search your current drive for such files:
dir \*.mny \*.mbf /s

Also, did you keep a copy or backup on other media?

If your file had a Passport or LiveID, note that the password is case sensitive, and the email address that you enter must be the one you used when you created the file. That email address need not exist anymore.

If you only have one vintage of mbf file, I am afraid that ... well, I wish I had better news.

Yes backup was in a different location. Have copies of both now on a USB as well. Attempted to use backup which gives the same error. Never used passport or live id, always been a straight password that has never changed. Password must be correct because if I use an alternative one, it gives password incorrect straight away. File size is 19MB, thinking of trying a different software like quicken to see if it can work. Any other thoughts before I head down this path?

1. I presume you have rebooted your computer, but if not, do so.

2.See if Sample.mny opens. That is in your Money folder in Program Files (x86).  If it does not, reinstall Money 2005.

3. If it does open, you could try a File->RepairMoneyFile->StandardFileRepair level 2
That only works on *.mny files, and not *.mbf files.

Did you reboot?

Can you open a copy of Sample.mny?

Yes, rebooted, reinstalled, even installed Money on a Virtual Machine and  able to open sample money and attempted to repair the file. Still get the error. Installed quicken and attempted to install and got password error the same as in Money. It driving me nuts. 20 years of history gone. Any other ideas. Happy to share it with some one to see if they can open?

I am not very hopeful. Sorry.

Have you tried restoring your oldest *.mbf file -- one that predates the problem? How about your old computer... could the *mny or *.mbf still be there? It may be two years old, but that seems better than starting over with a fresh file.

There is one thing I have suggested in the past, but nobody ever reported that it worked to solve a problem. But here it is:
In case the sunset salv.exe is improved since the Money 2005 version, it may work.  Yet nobody has ever reported joy after trying. This is a long shot, and you could be the first. You can find links at https://microsoftmoneyoffline.wordpress.com/2010/05/09/intro/#downloads which is on MICROSOFT MONEY OFFLINE -- Ameridan's Blog

Download the Money Plus Deluxe Sunset install file into a temporary folder. Use 7-zip, WinRar, or other zip program to extract the contents. I think that file is a self-extracting zip file of some sort, and I just tried it with 7-zip. The only file you are looking for is salv.exe.

Run salv.exe file. It will look the same as when you do your standard file repair with Money 2005. Put the result in a new file, maybe called hope2023.mny. See if that works. If not, I don't know that there is any hope, unless you find a *.mny or *.mbf file that predates the problem.

The Money Plus Sunset salv.exe will work with your UK  Money 2005 file, but Money Plus Sunset itself will not work with your UK money file.

Thanks Cal,
That already the version I was using already using and located the SAL file with no luck. Also found and tried the latest version and still no joy. I have resigned to the fact to restart from bank records which only go back a short period of time. Lesson learnt and will now implement scheduled auto google backups of different versions to the cloud on a weekly basis. Appreciate the efforts.

1. If you like, I could write a batch file that copies a particular filename to a place using the current date as part of the new filename.

You can use the  Windows Task Scheduler to run a batch file on a schedule.

2. There are some more complex programs that may or may not help. See the stuff mentioned in http://littlegreengecko.com/MSMstuff/money_reverse_engineering.html I don't want to give false hope. I did try the HLE Sunriise (note the two "i"s)  tool out of curiosity once, and it could read my working US file. HLe has been concentrating on HLE Quotes more recently.

Andrew,

Sorry to hear of your problem.  One remote possibility is that your Money file was created with a different version of Money than the one that you have installed. This could happen, for example, if you reinstalled the UK version of Money 2005 from your original disk rather than the patched download available at:

This might give that "Incorrect password" error when the real problem is a version difference.

Bill, That would bring about rejoicing. I had read this in his latest response: " Thanks Cal,
That already the version I was using already using and located the SAL file with no luck. Also found and tried the latest version and still no joy. I have resigned to the fact to restart from bank records which only go back a short period of time. "

I had interpreted that he meant he was already using the US Money Sunset salv.exe, While still using the  Money2005-IntlEngl-QFE2 version,  but in retrospect, I should have probed more.

Unfortunately, I think that Money Plus would have given a more informative error message if that was the only problem. The wrong 2005 Money version would have given a bogus bad-password error message. So if the original file was the International English version of 2005, and UK got installed later, or vice versa, then I would expect a bogus password message.

Correction, I presumed OP was using  Money2005-UK-QFE2. Assuming that a UK Money was the original install, that is what would be needed to open that file.

You can determine which regional version of Money 2005 or later  by running this command in a command window:
dir \mny*.aw /s

The command may take a while, depending on disk size and speed.  It will find one or more files in MNYCoreFiles\Works\

If the installation is UK, the file will be MNYUKEN.aw.  If it is
INTL English, it will have several files all starting with MNYEN.
The file for US would be MNYUSEN.aw.  So, to summarize, the 4th and
5th letters tell the story, UK, EN or US. Later US versions also should
 work for Canada.

You can try to use sunriise to see if it can read your mny file. The simplest method would be to see if you can export the content to CSV files.

> ... Money2005-UK ...

Another option: you can try the sunrise's diskusage tool which will show the table information. For UK mny file, you will see table with prefix UK

Today i encountered the same issue. It happened after i updated quotes using the MSM Quotes (Java program). It abruptly closed and now giving the same error as mentioned by Andy in his original email. One important note here...its creating a *.lrd file automatically when i try running the program. Any solutions?

thanks

V S: The .LRD is a record locking technique used by Money so that it can generate already-running  or other messages. It is automatic.
I suspect it stands for Lock Record Data.

Thanks cal for prompt response. The .lrd file stays in the folder even after i exit MS Money because it shows password error.

Close Money. Delete the LRD file. Open Money by starting the newest *.mbf file. That should restore the Money file. If that does not work, use the second-newest Money file.

If the file associations don't work with the WINE, then do File->Restore.
