MS Money will not load. I have been happily using MS Money 2004 UK with windows 10 for 6 years but recently it would only produce a blank screen in MS Money. However the programme would load from the DVD drive. The data files are OK. To resolve the problem I reloaded the programme from the DVD. Now the programme will not load at all.
When I click on the Money icon on the task bar it load a blank page with just the file name in the top left hand corner. When exiting from the programme it asks me if I wish to back it up.
When I try to load from the DVD it tried to load my file. But then a screen appears “About upgrading your Money file”. “Money will make a copy of your original file”
When I try to do this is says “Money cannot locate file or cannot open it possibly because it is read only or you do not have permission to change it or your disk drive is write protected” The same message appears if I try and restore a backup. I also receive the same results if I try and load a different data file.
I do remember having to go thought some complicated procedure when loading the programme initially but cannot find out the details now. However this seems to be a different problem. I have spent 3 days trying to resolve this without any progress. I would gratefully receive any assistance.
My version of Money is 14.0.120.1105.

Many thanks for your prompt reply Dominic. I did as you suggested but I still have a blank screen. I obtained the version number from help/about.
Thank you
John
Thank you Derek and Bob
1. My data files are in the documents area.
2. My security is just Windows security.
3. My data file is fine (though large at 120Mb). I have transferred it to a friend’s laptop and it works fine. I have other data files (for my children) and they will not load either.
4. I really want to avoid reloading windows. Last time it took me a week. I have some difficult programmes to load and hardware to connect.
5. I have run a Dell programme that tests the hardware but found nothing.
6. The sample.mny file when loaded in the documents area just produces a blank screen
7. The blank page is totally blank. I have no menus or anything else. It is a white page with a blue bar across the top with Microsoft Money on the left hand end.
John
WELL DONE CAL! YOU CRACKED IT.
For your information I am not familiar with starting Windows as a different user so I right clicked on the Money icon choosing run as administrator.
The page loaded saying:
“Money will update your file with the latest improvements”
“First money will make a copy of your file c\users\mail\documents\money\sample.mny
then money will update the file with the latest improvements”
“your money file has been successfully updated”
Then I was able to load my own file.
The programme will not load clicking the Money icon on the task bar. The blank page loads. But at least I have the file back. That I have to run as an administrator presumably indicates that I have a fault somewhere, which might get worse someday. So it would be nice to be able to load from the task bar icon.
I cannot tell you how long I have spent trying to overcome this problem. First I tried to resolve it. Then I decided that I would have to leave Money so researched, with the help of Which, the other personal finance packages on the market. I decided on Moneydance. I spent ages trying to transfer files to Moneydance. Then I concluded that Moneydance would not give me the required investment information and it would take a weeks work to transfer all my 200 accounts to Moneydance and correct all the errors on transfer. Then I discovered your website. I am extremely grateful for your efforts and for those of Derek and Bob.
In spite of its age Money is a much more sophisticated programme for investments than Moneydance of any of the others available. It is just a pity that it will not download share prices any longer.

To avoid any need to right click run as administrator every time I run the program this is the trick I did and it seems to work:
I found the Money program, msmoney.exe file, for which I needed to temporarily allow viewing of system files, and created this Shortcut to the Money program:
"C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft Money 2005\MNYCoreFiles\msmoney.exe"
I put the Shortcut in the same folder as the Money program. Then in the Shortcut Properties I clicked Advanced and ticked the tick box “Run as administrator”.
The Money icon which resides in my taskbar is set to point to the above Shortcut rather than directly to the Money program so Money always runs as administrator..
Has anyone else done this I wonder? Maybe it is not necessary?
Regards
Ian

According to DominicP, Money Sunset and QFE2 versions do not actually need IE to be installed. The programs actually include their own, limited capability IE browser which serves as the GUI, yet apparently, the programs still contain residual code which, on installation, checks the registry for the presence of IE and its build number.
If Microsoft ever removes the legacy Trident (also known as MSHTML) proprietary browser engine (mshtml.dll) and associated IE registry entries, installation / reinstallation of Money may cease to function, which is the primary reason why I have turned off Windows 10 automatic (and manual) updates, although I do intend to periodically catch-up with stable versions that remain Money-friendly.
Does that read correctly now?
