I use the QIF format to import investment transactions from my broker to my Money file

The process is very straightforward
Step 1: menu options File / Import / Recover accounts, then select the file with the transactions and click on Import

Step 2: select the investment account click on OK

Step 3: As the investment is correctly named in the qif file, now click on OK and the import is completed.

I have tried a few options to try and get Money to recognise the Investment account but to no avail

Is there a way to specify the Investement account in the QIF file so that it is pre-selected in step 2 above?

The QIIF format does not allow for an account number. Without an account number to match, Money cannot unambiguously assign an import to an account. The name match is not sufficient. This is a limitation (one of many) in QIF.

Ah!

I'll see if I can generate an OFX file - a little bit more complicated but that will help pass the time

A QFX file also contains an account number and will be imported into the proper account.  You may have to tell Money which account the first time, - not sure about that.

If the account number matches, you are merely verifying the chosen account.

but the investment account "Linked Finance" is not selected when I import / Recover account. I have to select it manually everytime

Bill & I were referencing a QFX / OFX file, not QIF.

Joe, if you decide to try making an OFX file, I want to make some suggestions about generating a FITID. If the same transaction ever gets brought in to an account two or more times, it should have the same FITID each time. That is how Money identifies if it has already seen that transaction. So you might generate your FITID as a function of things like date, amount, type of transaction. But if you buy a coffee in the morning and the same in the afternoon, you would want those to each have their own FITID. So something to think about. And no shame in thinking about generating an OFX from a QIF or CSV file, but not actually doing it. It's not easy.

OK, I was able to create an OFX file which imports to the correct investment account with requiring account selection but OFX does not support assigning Income and Expense amounts to the categories I use in Money.

Qif supports this option and this is more useful to me than having the investment file pre-selected, so I will stick with a Qif import

End of story

Joe, I'm pretty sure subsequent imports will assign the most recent category for recognized payees, so give ofx a little more time.

There is no payee for investment transactions, so while the category may be assigned by default, that doesn't help

The OFX formnat does not have a way to assign categories to investment transactions while QIF does (the "L" keyword)

So I don't think you are going to have a category for Buy and Sell transactions in the investment transactions register.  Transactions can come into the cash register with Payees. What is an example of a transaction that QIF could bring in a category where there is no potential payee?

Also, to bring transactions into an investment account, you may want to bring in two QIF transactions at the same time -- investment and cash.

There is no possibility to put the information in the "L" lines into an OFX file and import them into Money

As it is, the QIF import gives me this in my investment account

Creative use of investment transactions, although I am wondering about a Sell of "Ace Autobody". For a Sell, you need to have that security in your portfolio.. Typically those kinds of business transactions would come into the cash account, and those have payees. But this is working for you, and that is great.
