I recently had to reset my laptop with a fresh install of windows i have always backed up my money file regularly always keeping the most recent. i copied the backup to a usb before the reset. i have reinstalled Money 2005 but when trying to restore from the backup file it asks for the passsword and when i enter the only password i have ever used it gives an error message saying incorrect password is there anyway around this or have i really lost all of my data. Thanks for reading Dave

Are you using the same keyboard layout as before? Thanks to Microsoft, that's my standard error.

You cannot use the Money 2005 install disk to reinstall Money 2005. You can discard that unless you want to keep it as a momento.

I suspect you need tMoney 2005 UK – QFE2, but you select the appropriate version.

Also, reconsider your backup plan. Keep more than one vintage. If you always overwrite your backups, you are in danger of a corrupted file or file system saving a corrupted file.

Dave,
A little more detail on Cal's response.  Money 2005 received an online update that is, of course, not included in the installation disk.  So you need to get the updated version of the installation file from the link that Cal gave.  In addition, the "incorrect password" error message is misleading.  It means that you are trying to open a Money file with a Money program version that is older than the version that created the file.

As for backups, having more than one is essential.  Flash drives are cheap so I strongly recommend having several that you can rotate through to keep multiple (maybe weekly) backups.  Be sure to store at least one drive "off site" to protect against a disaster.  It's also a good idea to also save the Money installation file on each drive to protect against the event that the download site goes away.  That's highly unlikely, but life is uncertain.

Dave,

Actually, you want the most recent version in that link that will open a Money file for your region.. For the UK and International that's 2005.  For the US and Canada it's US Money Plus Deluxe Sunset.  You can see the version of your current Money installation by opening the sample.mny file found in C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft Money.  (The exact folder name will vary depending on the Money version.)

This Wikipedia article gives the various versions: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Microsoft_Money

If you have a US version then after you install US Money Plus Deluxe Sunset you also need to do a replacement of the mnyob99.dll file.  See

Post back if you need help with that.

If you first installed in 2005 or before, the version you need is usally determined by what country you were in when you first installed Money.

How many copies of that  QDATA4 Backup.mbf01.mbf  file do you have. If the answer is one, make another copy onto different media  to guard against a failure of some sort.

Do you have the old *.mny file still available?

Dave,

I just realized that the link that Cal Lerner provided (https://microsoftmoneyoffline.wordpress.com/2010/05/09/intro/#downloads) has a wealth of information on Money.  It is well worth the time it takes to read through it.

As for the version you have just installed, - find the sample.mny file on your computer, double-click it, and Money will open with a sample file.  You can then click on Help>About Microsoft Money and get the version number.  Then you can find that in the link that Cal provided.

We will help you through this.  Hang in there!

Dave,
Maybe I misunderstood, but you said that you installed Money and that is when you discovered the password problem.  Since you have Money installed, you can open the sample.mny file and find the version that you have.  Or you can use the process described in the excellent reverence that Cal gave:

Determining what version of Money you have installed

If you are able to run Money, select Help, and then select About Money.  An alternative method…

C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft Money Plus\MNYCoreFiles\msmoney.exe

Right-click on the file    and select Properties.   Product name and version will be revealed after you select the Details tab…

money ver

It's from this page:

which has additional excellent information about using Money.

Perhaps a file named QDATA4.mny already exists in that directory. Try changing the filename for the restored file?? Good luck.

Is there a way to do a file integrity check for the mny file in question?

You can try using  salv.exe (http://moneymvps.org/faq/article/328.aspx)
OR if you need a "second opinion", you can try the export tool from sunriise (https://bitbucket.org/hleofxquotesteam/dist-sunriise/wiki/Home). It can parse the mny file and export the content to CSV files. Not a direct file checker per se but if sunriise can export the content then it is likely that the file content is OK.

When you say backup, do uyou mean you backed up from within  Money - the file extension will .mbf - or are you talking about a copy of the Money file (.mny) you made using Windows?

Dave,

Very glad to hear that you are up and running.  One more thing, if you haven't done it already.  You should download a patched version of the mnyob99.dll file and replace the one that comes with Money Sunset with the downloaded one.  The process to do this is described on this page:

and the patched file is here:

Post back if you need help in doing this.
