I have been a long time MS Money User and have 25+ years of records in my MS Money files.

After a systems update that Microsoft pushed onto my computer, my MS Money won't open anymore. It goes to the entry screen and then is stuck there indefinitely. I've tried to uninstall it and reinstall it. I've tried asking Claude CoWork. I have tried launching via back-up. I've tried launching from an older computer (it too had the system update).

Nothing seems to work. I'm freaking out a bit because I don't have any other software that can manage my money like MS Money has been able to.

Anyone have any suggestions or have faced the same/similar issues? Would appreciate any help/guidance you can provide.

Hi Neela,
I had the same problem which started about 2 months ago and lasted about a month.  I tried using back up databases, reloading Money, disabling other things, but nothing. Money was just stuck at the first screen, never showing the various menu options.  It was registering very small CPU usage but no progress.  Sometimes I waited hours, probably once for nearly 24 hours in case it might break through.  My guess was that is was stuck at some Permission/Access request.  I started to redesign my life to live without it (not with any speedy success).  Suddenly the problem disappeared  whilst I was not working on it!  I had the windows updates as attached and I suspect that KB5082417 or KB5083769 started it and KB5089549 or KB5087051 fixed it but I can't prove that, although the dates are a perfect match to when it went off and came back.
Good luck.
Jim.

Hi Neelam,

Is this Windows 11? My systems are updated and they don't suffer from this problem. Are you running the US sunset edition? Both deluxe and business work for me. As you have tried two different machines, perhaps it's a regional factor. Just a couple of ideas: Could it be the database? Have you tried an old backup or a new file? You could also install Money on a virtual machine. Virtual Box is quite easy to install, and Money works well on Windows 7. That would rule out the system update you suggested and would allow you to experiment with different regional settings. Running Money inside a VM is clunky, but a viable option. It was my only option in Linux until a very switched-on and kind community member got it working with Wine!

Regards,
Glenn

If you use Money Sunset, it is important to have the patched  mnyob99.dl

https://microsoftmoneyoffline.wordpress.com/ has links to various downloads.

Hi Cal:
Thank you Cal!

I could not find the patch on the website you pointed me to; I google searched another patch and installed it and that didn't solve my issue. Any other thoughts/ideas?

I suggest you open any file you can, such as Sample.mny.
You can do that by going to your Money install folder, right-clicking Sample.mny, and choosing Open.
Go to Tools->Settings->ProgramSettings and set the (GeneralDisplay:)StartMoneyWithThisPageOpen:AccountList.
Close Money.

Then open the problem file once or twice.

Then Tools->Settings->HomePageDisplaySettings and Remove the Investment Performance module. If you still have a problem, remove everything. If the problem goes away, you can add things back until the crash does not happen. Add back in the other things you want on the home page. Let us know which was the problem module.

If that did not fix it, reboot your computer. Try again.

If still a problem, copy Sample.mny from your install folder (typically C:\Program Files\Microsoft Money Plus\ ) to your
Documents folder.  Open Money by right-clicking that copy of sample.mny and choose Open.  Did the file open?

If no, reinstall Money. Apply the patched  mnyob99.dll again.  If yes, close Money. Right-click your newest *.mbf file (not from Sample) and choose Open. Restore your file.

If that does not succeed, right-click your second-newest *.mbf file and choose Open. Restore your file.

Let us know what happens.

Cal/All:
Thank you for your help. I don't know that I have fixed the problem permanently, but was able to follow Cal's instructions and something clicked it back into gear (at least on an older back-up); have spent the last 3+ hours re-entering expenses from the last 3+ months and have a couple accounts to go.

I did what Cal recommended until the last step recommended - "right-click your second-newest *.mbf file and choose Open"...I went back about 5 or 6 *.mbf files and it finally opened. I have opened and closed the new file several times and it seems to be working (fingers crossed). I have saved several back-ups on different drives just in case to preserve at least up until today.

THANK YOU!!!! for your help!!! Painful, but breathing a little bit easier now (I was full-on panic mode before).

If nothing else, this helped me find this group; great to find people that appreciate MS Money as much as I do (wish Microsoft would bring it back and start supporting it again).

Glad that is working.

Make a copy of what you have onto other media while you are thinking of it.

It is good that you had several vintages of backups. I don't know why you had to go back so many backups, and while the third-oldest, for example, did not open.

I currently keep about 20 upon-exit backups, and about 20 scheduled backups. I put the scheduled backups onto a USB drive, which coincidently failed after many years. I should rotate my backup USBs.

I spoke too soon. It's acting up again (SMH). I hope I don't have to go back even more back-ups to get this restored...

Thank you.

File repair. :
I would try to repair your *.mny file. Start with
 File->RepairMoneyFile->QuickFileRepair

Then do
 File->RepairMoneyFile->StandardFileRepair level 2

Then again
 File->RepairMoneyFile->QuickFileRepair

If you cannot open Money, you can run salv.exe.

That is typically  at "C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft Money Plus\MNYCoreFiles\salv.exe"   Salv.exe only works on *.mny files -- not *.mbf files.

If you have not tried reinstall, and the other stuff did not fix things, reinstall. Then put the repaired dll into place.

Note you can use File History which will backup previous versions of the Money file if stored in your Documents folder. I also use scheduled Macrium Reflect backups going back several months. Plus you can also backup the Money file from within MS Money.
