Does anybody have any experience of using Skrooge instead of Microsoft Money?
The
BIG selling point for me is the
direct import of
.mny files. It does this by using the
sunriise export-to-json library, from which it then imports all categories, payees, securities, accounts and transactions, directly! So no messing around with exporting/importing individual
.qif files etc.... (see
mny import plugin source for details)
My MS Money .mny file is currently 64MB and goes back to early 1997, so there's a LOT of transaction history I couldn't bear to lose! I'm using UK Money 2005 / v14, currently on Windows 10, but I'm intending to jump ship to Linux when Win10 goes end of life next month - I have years of Linux experience, so that's no problem.
I've been following all the "MS Money on Wine" activity and been slightly disappointed that the UK 2005 version isn't currently stable on Wine, hence needing to look for an alternative.
Apparently Skrooge is "single entry", so more like MS Money than some of the alternative double-entry based apps like GnuCash and KMyMoney, which is also a big plus for Skrooge.
Unfortunately, to get Skrooge to run on Windows, it has to be installed in WSL as there isn't a native installer for it, so that's a bit awkward, but not insurmountable. I should be able to try it out on a Linux Mint laptop too.
So, does anybody have any experience of Skrooge? Any tips or gotchas I need to look out for?
Thanks,
A D
