Hello everyone,

I am looking for a good way to record a stock name change without losing basis, dividend and price history - and preferably also without losing transaction history under the old name.

My scenario:
  • Using Microsoft Money Sunset Edition (US Edition)
  • Investment transactions are manually entered (not downloaded)
  • Currency of the transactions is NOT USD.
I know I can simply rename the stock in Money (which I have currently done).  However, that changes the name in past transactions as well (which then messes up tax-related and other reports related to past transactions of that stock).

While searching this group, I came across this post from Cal Learner in 2021:.
https://groups.google.com/g/microsoft-money/c/Za8ozWCNKmI/m/JHohRKGOBwAJ

It appears that post was for the scenario where transactions were downloaded using Pocketsense.  I was wondering if this process would be appropriate for my scenario as well (NOT downloading transactions and transactions in foreign currency) or if there is a better way.

Any help from Cal or any other member of this awesome group would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
Shashi

1. I have sometimes renamed a stock to something like these:
Evergy Inc was Westar Energy Inc EVRG
APA Corporation was Apache Corp APA,
Sitio Royalties Corp was Brigham Minerals MNRL

I aways put the symbol at the end of the name. That is not necessary.

2. You can record name changes and dates in the details.

If downloading transactions, these will come through as a Buy and a Sell. But it is really just a rename. So if you have that situation, say so. There are special steps to get the future downloads to match the renamed security.

Another way, appropriate to a tax-free buyout, is to do  Portfolio->RecordASpecialActivity->RecordAMerger

This keeps data and reports separate. Money enters a Buy and Sell, but transfers the basis to the new survivor. There are hidden things associated with the Sell and Buy. You will have separate histories. This is the way Money was designed. It may be easier for downloads than the rename method.

If these don't seem to address your situation, please elaborate on your situation.

After review,  Portfolio->RecordASpecialActivity->RecordAMerger best meet your objectives. It would not be my favorite for an actual name change, but it does keep the old name. So for the change from Google GOOG to Alphabet GOOG, I would like the rename with a note in the details. But you may prefer the  RecordAMerger. But in the case of Alphabet was Google GOOG, I see no point in keeping them separate in reports etc.

Thanks for your responses, Cal.  All of those are great suggestions - I will try them out.
