msmoneysetup update, 06 October 2026 (Linux and macOS)

Changes since the 03Oct2026 (Linux) and 04Oct2026 (macOS) releases.

Both platforms

- Printing: the Cancel button now works in Money's print windows, including
File, Print Setup, Report and Chart Setup. File, Print Setup, Check Setup no
longer crashes Money. Fixed for Money Plus Sunset and Money 2005.

- The installer now applies its fixes directly to the Money mnyob99.dll file in Money's
Program Files directory, and keeps the original beside it:
    - US Sunset versions: the two community fixes for crashes when importing
      transactions (Raymond Chen's and PalOMoney's).
    - All versions: Account List subtotals drawn in the right place.
    - All versions: the Print Checks crash is fixed.
    - All versions: clicking Cancel in the printing dialog box works.
    - This makes the msmoneysetup.zip file smaller since no dll's are bundled.

- The fix for cut-off Payee and Category text in the register is now a choice. In Wine, when a
transaction is edited directly in the register, the text in the Payee and
Category boxes is cut off at the bottom. The fix shows that text in full, but
it also makes the same boxes in the transaction forms slightly taller, so
they cover some of the form's lines. The installer now asks whether you edit
transactions directly in the register, with the transaction forms turned
off. Answer y to get the fix. Press Enter (No, the default) if you use the
forms; they then look the way Money draws them.

- Downloads are more robust: each one is tried up to five times, the Money
installers and Internet Explorer 7 are checked against known checksums, and a
progress bar shows that a slow download is still moving.

- Money's own preferences are saved each time you close Money and restored the
  next time you install.

- Higher DPI/zoom settings don't break the Bills pages.

- The guides have been gone through from top to bottom: Quick Start, Full and
Uninstall guides for each platform. They now list every piece of third-party
software the installer downloads and where it comes from, and every change
the installer makes to your system.

Linux

- The uninstall script is now in msmoneysetup/uninstall (the folder is no longer
hidden). It asks before removing Wine; the default is No.
- Log files are now named wine-money-error.log and wine-quotes-error.log.
- The winetricks wrapper script is gone; the installer handles winetricks itself.
- The GetData menu entry opens in a terminal window. Please let me know if anyone is still using pocketsense.

macOS

- The display settings from Wine Configuration are saved each time you close
Money and restored the next time you install.
- New: macos_UninstallGuide.txt.

Thanks to everyone who keeps using this software and providing feedback. This is the best it's ever been, this has been the most satisfying version so far,  and I appreciate all the help. Let me know if anyone sees anything off. The quickstart guides are attached.

Hi Nathan,

I've been following your recent improvements to MS Money on Linux.

MS Money is currently working very well on my system.  Thank you for that.

I do still use Pocketsense.  My bank still provides direct-connect OFX access and thanks to Cal's F2O script I can d/l Fidelity transactions and create a combined OFX file of everything.

I will install the latest build and report back if there's any issues.

Thanks again for your work on these scripts.

Hi Kevin,

I was thinking of you primarily and pocketsense. As long as it's working I'll keep bundling it. None of my banks supprt direct connect anymore so I don't run it and haven't tested it lately; I had to build a custom scrubber for my stuff. If you have any problems though let me know. I've learned a lot over the last week or two about deconstructing dlls and tweaking mnyob99.dll for wine. Long live Microsoft Money!

Even if you don't directly import ofx via Pocketsense, the program works great with ofx downloads via the web, F2O, and csv to ofx conversions via BoA-MFP - all saved in the import folder, where Pocketsense creates a combined ofx files for all of the imports.

Understood. I'm taking a look at the pocketsense scripts right now with an emphasis on proper python2 to python3 conversion. I'll have something to test in a day or two, I've found some syntax errors I didn't know about before because my use-case didn't touch those pipelines. I won't make a whole new msmoneysetup for this, just a new pocketsense zip.

Hi Nathan,

I'm glad to hear that you are learning new things.  I always used to say that if you stop learning, you stop living. :)

Install.sh ran flawlessly.  I have to confess that I was a little reluctant to do the upgrade since MS Money & Pocketsens were working so well as it was.

I haven't had to run Install.sh in so long that I had forgotten where to store my USMoneyDlxSunset.exe file.  I don't see any mention of it in the latest Guides.

Regardless, I just let the script download and install it.  Is that the intended procedure as of now?

I did need to run winecfg to reduce the dpi setting to 96.  I have a 15.5 in. laptop set at 1366 x 768 so the default 120 dpi was a little too large.

Lastly, I had to redo my Settings in MS Money.

The entire installation process was entirely painless.

Well done, Sir!

Thanks Cal! I've fallen off following the pocketsense blog and didn't realize development had continued. So maybe I can bundle the new pocketsense3 with your F2O package? I'm not sure how many users there are, but I have a function to initiate pocketsense from the Linux Start menu.

Hi Kevin!

I'm glad to hear that you are learning new things.  I always used to say that if you stop learning, you stop living. :)

Well, I'm not trying to stop living!

Install.sh ran flawlessly.  I have to confess that I was a little reluctant to do the upgrade since MS Money & Pocketsens were working so well as it was.

Awesome! This has been my goal. I run the Uninstall/Install cycle so often that I need it to just work, every time, exactly the same way, as does everyone. I don't typically like surprises.

I haven't had to run Install.sh in so long that I had forgotten where to store my USMoneyDlxSunset.exe file.  I don't see any mention of it in the latest Guides.

This is all automatic now. Only msmoneyquotes is needed since I can't bundle it.

Regardless, I just let the script download and install it.  Is that the intended procedure as of now?

Yes. It will grab whatever Money you want to run, patch the mnyob99.dll and fix all the broken items that we know about. If you like to edit the transactions directly in the register, then that's covered now too.If you find anything else, let me know. The Quick Guides should explain everything now. (I hope! Documentation isn't always very fun lol)

I did need to run winecfg to reduce the dpi setting to 96.  I have a 15.5 in. laptop set at 1366 x 768 so the default 120 dpi was a little too large.

OK. Roger that. Maybe I can add something to the installer to ask this from the beginning so people can set it if they already know what they need..

Lastly, I had to redo my Settings in MS Money.

Ah ok. You would have to copy the files for them over. The good thing is I really feel like the whole system is very stable at this point, so the next time you might be able to just overwrite your existing msmoneysetup with the new one. That would keep your Money preferences. At the same time, I feel like I have a really good framework and I don't foresee very many new msmoneysetup releases as often. Maybe every January when the new Wine is released.

The entire installation process was entirely painless.

I love it! This is what I've been working towards. I really want Money to be fully functional, Windows-equivalent,  and easy to use. Fantastic!

I'll make sure that pocketsense3 works with my Start/Main Menu script and start including it. I haven't been bundling it with the macOS msmoneysetup because I haven't heard of anyone wanting it. I can do that if there's interest.

Thanks again Kevin, take care.

OK. I'll still have to modify pocketsense3 to make it work on Linux and macOS. Not a big deal, but it's not a drop-in replacement.

Kevin, (or anyone else who's interested),

If you're up for try this one out (attached here for testing and since it's small).

I've done a couple things:

- The installer asks you what DPI setting you want to use, stating that 96 is the Wine default and that the smaller the number, the smaller the fonts. If you have the mnyprefs.reg file saved it will use that, if not it will ask.
- I cleaned up all the debug noise. It's still logged for me in case I need it but in general the terminal doesn't need to be that noisy. It makes it easier to see the parts where Install.sh asks questions.
- I took pocketsense3 and made the changes needed for Linux and macOS. It's in the folder called pocketsense3_linux-macos. The Main menu GetData shortcut will run it. Also, a file from a bank not in sites.dat gets the general scrub only instead of the first site's rules, the original moves to import\done\ instead of being rewritten in place, and a file that isn't OFX or QFX is named in a "Skipping" line. I tested a couple of qfx files and they imported properly. They were also saved into import/done/, renamed with timestamps.

I haven't tested on macOS yet, I need to add a package for python called requests to make it work, at least for people who still have direct connect or use quotes retrieval.

Depending on your thoughts I'll integrate these changes.

Hi Nathan,

Thank you for your replies.

I suspected that since you are hosting all of the MS Money exe's on your Google Drive site that importing them was probably now the default.  Fortunately, I'm not on a 56k baud modem. :)

It's been so long since I've installed Pocketsense on Linux.  I must have been using it all along with Moneydance.
I believe that I'm using the Python3 version from here:  https://github.com/magnuspyke/ofxscripts
magnuspyke was one of the first to offer a Python3 version of Pocketsense on the forums.

I am likely using Pocketsense in a manner different that how you're designing it to be used.  I set up 2 instances of it.  One, I run just to obtain stock quotes and one I run to collect transactions.  The stock quotes are strictly for MS Money, I import the transactions into both Moneydance and Money.

I do the imports separately because, as you are aware, MS Money is so stringent with only allowing 1 price quote import per day.

I'll give the 07Oct2026 version a try to test the dpi option and observe the cleaned-up terminal.  I'm kind of set in my Pocketsense ways. I hope you don't mind if I leave that for others to test.

It's good to chat with you again.

Hi again Nathan,

I merged 07Oct2026 with my existing msmoneysetup folder.  Thus, I was not prompted for a dpi setting which I suppose is the expected behavior.  The dpi setting was however preserved @ 96.  Awesome!

TBH, I couldn't tell if the terminal output was any more or less than before, but it is still interesting to watch all the various processes as the occur.

I 'almost' clicked 'Next' at the very end of the installation.  I don't recall what ugliness happens if the user makes that mistake.

Perhaps a mention of that needs to be made more urgent in the guides.  Maybe an ALL CAPS mention right at the beginning of the guide and again ALL CAPS when it is mentioned as part of the installation.

I can't think of any other improvements.  You've really hit this one out of the park!

Hi Nathan,

I forgot to mention that when merging the new msmoneysetup folder with the existing msmoneysetup folder, the Settings in MS Money were preserved.  Nice!

Thanks Kevin, great feedback. I put your comments in quotes and replied inline.

"I am likely using Pocketsense in a manner different that how you're designing it to be used.  I set up 2 instances of it.  One, I run just to obtain stock quotes and one I run to collect transactions.  The stock quotes are strictly for MS Money, I import the transactions into both Moneydance and Money."

Yes, I remember you were doing something like that. In considering that people might not want GetData in their start menu, I'm going to add this as a question during install. (Do you use pocketsense3, and do you want the GetData tool in your Application Menu?) And in considering that idea, I *finally* realized that questions are asked throughout the install process instead of all at once in the beginning. I'm going to implement that too. Thanks for giving me the kick in the noggin! Sorry it took me this long to realize this! lol That's what happens when you're really deep in the code and everything.

"I 'almost' clicked 'Next' at the very end of the installation.  I don't recall what ugliness happens if the user makes that mistake."

Thanks for this. It means that the instruction isn't clear enough. Is that the part when you're supposed to click File, Open and select your mny file? If that's the case there's no ugliness, you would be on the process of setting up a new mny file; probably not what most people want. I'll clean this up too.

"I forgot to mention that when merging the new msmoneysetup folder with the existing msmoneysetup folder, the Settings in MS Money were preserved.  Nice! "

Yes! I think the structure of msmoneysetup is finally set, and probably won't change much for the Linux version, if at all. This would allow overwriting an existing msmoneysetup. macOS might be different since the hurdles are a bit higher and there's a lot of development still happening with Sikarugir. Hopefully though, msmoneysetup shouldn't change too much anymore for the macOS version either..

Thanks for the feedback. I'll work on this and make it a new released version in a day or two.

Hi Nathan,

>Is that the part when you're supposed to click File, Open and select your mny file?

Yes, that was what I was referring to.

If memory serves me correctly, (in the very early builds) clicking 'Next' would cause a crash.  I think it was because the script was trying to access the file system?  Maybe it was only on my system or maybe my memory is not serving me correctly after all. :)

Anyway, it sounds like it's not all that ugly anymore.
