MSMoney crisis! When I tried to open MSMoney today, I got a couple of error messages, and the program did not start. Is my next step to re-install MSMoney? I'm kind of afraid to start any repair without some advice first!

I initially thought that this was related to a recent Windows 11 update, but I don't actually see any recent updates in my Update History other than antivirus Definition updates. All the Quality, Driver and Other updates were installed nearly a month ago.

I have the MSMoney install file and the .dll that needs to be corrected saved on my laptop and in a few other backup locations. Is it time to use them?

Panicked, because it's time to start working on my income tax return, and a lot of the info I need is in MSMoney!

You need to say what version of Windows 11 you are using?
32-bit or 64-bit?
What is the latest Quality Updates?

Did you install any other programs recently? Maybe they installed a bad comctl32.dll?

I thought I was installing a Windows update just a couple of days ago. I chose  UPDATE and RESTART, and then went to bed. In the morning the laptop was ready to go, so I assumed that the update had been installed, but the Update History doesn't have a record of it.

Here are the specifications that you asked for. I didn't intentionally install any new software recently.

The latest Windows update is 24H2

Maybe someone or something changed your COMCTL32.com

My laptop is dead. The error I was seeing was probably the beginnings of a corrupted hard drive. I was able to repair whatever was keeping MSMoney from opening and I used it for a couple additional days. Then today I got the infamous blue screen of death, and nothing I have tried has revived the machine. So thank you to Joe Dempsey and Bob Smiley for attempting to address my problem. It was not a MSMoney problem.

Doris, sorry you have to go through this.  I hope you can read out your *.mny file or a recent backup (*.mbf). I have my weekly scheduled backup go to a USB flash drive.  There are inexpensive USB adapters that may allow another computer to read files from your old drive-- even if it is a solid state drive.

A reinstallation of Windows might get the computer going again, but a new faster computer might be the better way and give better performance.

Thanks for getting back to us with the follow-up.

Doris, here's a list of programs one can use to identify a bad drive...

New laptop drives are not expensive if you desire to keep your hardware. Once installed, you can reinstall Windows, and then reinstall Money. If nothing else, this gives you a backup machine if you decide to buy a new laptop altogether.

You can also buy an external adapter to access the data on your old drive.
