Collect MP usages

In the past, I was asked to get implementation details for each MP Spec. A number of us came together to populate this wiki https://wiki.eclipse.org/MicroProfile/Implementation, which turned out to be quite useful.

From time to time, I was approached with the question of what are the customers for each MP Specs. Since we are doing Open Source, it is difficult to track down customers. I am wondering whether we can collect client info so that we know who are our customers. It will be great to put the client website against each individual spec.

I am thinking to directly edit this implementation wiki https://wiki.eclipse.org/MicroProfile/Implementation by adding a column. Can someone make a start? Thoughts?

Thanks

Emily

Did those asking you about this say what the benefit was of knowing which customers might be using a specific spec?

I can see benefit in knowing customers that utilize MP in general.

Also, implementors may not know exactly which specifications a customer uses, just that they use MP. It can become out of date quickly if a customer changes which specs they’re using.

In terms of editing that particular page, I’d be against that. That page is specific to implementation details of each spec and overall MP. Adding more information is likely to add confusion, and also make editing even more difficult than it already is.

The reason to list the customers using any specific spec gives us some opportunities to contact them for some feedback and also potentially influence our release plan. By the way, asking which spec they used is a logic question. If no one can answer that, it is fine. Anyway, any info about overall usage or specific usage is fine.

I think adding one more column on the implementation makes more sense, as this reduces the maintenance overhead without the need to duplicate each individual specs and releases. It also gives us the central place to get all info about implementation and customers. I suggest we can try it out. If it does not work, we can split it up.

We can start with the general M usage per se, which is the on the top the table. If anyone wants to add their name on the follow on columns against any specific specs, it is fine. If no one objects, I will edit this table and give it a go tomorrow.

Thanks
Emily

What you're suggesting is a very different proposition than what most customers expect when adding their company name as a user of a particular project. It needs to be handled carefully to ensure that companies are aware that anyone could be contacting them about the MicroProfile APIs they use in their projects. From my perspective, I don't see the advantage to this level of detail.

It might reduce maintenance overhead of multiple pages, but significantly increases the complexity of maintaining that single page, which is already difficult.

Before you go adding the information to the page, there needs to be more than just yourself stating this is a good idea.

I was not going to add contact details in the open though. Sure, let's collect some feedback on whether it is a good idea to advertise who are the customers of MP. I'll start a new thread for people to vote.

Thanks

I don't think it's necessary to hold a vote.

I'm merely suggesting that we wait to see what others in the community say in this thread.

Collecting customer names and emails, even in a non-open list, would require care.  For example, customers would need to know we were tracking their info, and what purpose it was for (to not run afoul of GDPR).  If we intended to use it to contact them, we'd need to be explicit about that when they sign up as well.

Sorry Emily, I don't think it 's good idea.
We should separate pages because one page should have only one aim.

Furthermore, i don't understand exactly your aim.
You want add testimonials (it's public information) or you want usage
details of Microprofile API (for roadmap, but it's privates
informations)

First of all, I only intend to say which company, e.g. IBM etc, utlises MP specification. There will be NO contact details.

The information servers as the MP usage, so that we can show how popular MP is. That is all! Without this, do we know whether we have customers, who they are? I would be very interested in knowing which companies adopt MP.

Since no one else have any strong opinion, I've create a separate page for this based on Ken and Lilian's suggestions.

Here is it. I have added Adoptions heading with Client list page. I only put a draft table there. Feel free to update.

Thanks
Emily

Hi Emily,

Your link points to the Wiki's main page. I think the correct url is https://wiki.eclipse.org/MicroProfile/Adoptions

Thanks Guillermo,
Yes, that is the page I created. Previously I wanted to show how it looks from the main page.
I encourage people to start populating this table.

Thanks
Emily
