Merge, branch and update of conference app

We have an outstanding merge to bring master up to the MP 1.1 release, and we have work ongoing to update services to MP 1.2.

What I plan to do tomorrow barring any objections is:

1. Merge the outstanding PR to bring the master to MP 1.1

2. Create an MP-1.1 branch at that commit

3. Merge outstanding changes to bring the master to MP 1.2.
