Breaking news!!!

MicroProfile track is alive on EclipseCon France 2018.

I am hoping many of you submit a few talks with featured MP and/or EE4. CFP (https://www.eclipsecon.org/france2018/cfp) is open now. This is the great chance for us to be successful. If we do well, I won't be surprised other conferences will follow suit. Now, we have the ideal chance and let's work together to make a big splash.

CFP closes on 19th Match.
Conference Venue: Toulouse, France  June 13 - 14

Gentle reminder:

Please submit sessions to EclipseCon France, 13-14 June. cfp is open. I'll submit a few sessions myself. I created a conference sheet in our MP conference spread to coordinate our sessions. Please go ahead to submit sessions and also add an entry in our spreadsheet , which is also in our wiki.

I gave it a try but it seems with too many Jakarta EE topics there was not enough room for MicroProfile other than a few general talks.
I did not see a single Metric or Health proposal in the CFP, so guess it has to be covered in a different form.

And like other threads mention only very few, mostly corporate speakers get accepted it seems.
JNoSQL Otavio proposed together with me is still on "standby" but being a true Individual member who does not get paid by a client or employer to spend time at conferences nor would they pay a conference pass, I can't say, it it's going to be affordable like that. Only one of multiple speakers usually gets any discount (not even a free pass) therefore we have to see, if Otavio needs that discount should it even be accepted (it wasn't last time)

Depending on what could go on at the Unconference around Jakarta EE and if it is as welcoming towards individual committers as say the Science WG, I may consider the Unconference day because I am unlikely to have more than a day or so anyway (like JavaLand)

Looking at the final program, neither Health nor Metrics topics made it into the program.

Quite likely also an overwhelming majority of Corporate speakers (even Ivar now seems to represent his company Cybercom at Eclipse Foundation, seems fair especially if they want him to join say a Jakarta EE WG ;-) are given preference over Individuals or SMEs at EclipseCon. This is not the first time.

E.g. the only time I spoke at EclipseCon US (which stopped to exist after 2016) it was sponsored and supported by the company behind Eclipse-based patient management system Elexis ;-)
Only 4-6 speakers total have no affiliation to a larger company at the ECF talks, that is quite symtomatic ;-/

And goes pretty well along the lines of what community members point out in other places like the EE4J list.

Werner,
I wouldn't generalize accepts as being Corporate speakers only...  Yes, I did get an accept for my talk on Jakarta EE, but I also had 5 declines.  In my decline letters, it indicated that they were trying to spread the wealth and only accept one submission from each speaker.  And, if you are lucky enough to get an accept, the conference registration is waived for speakers.  Travel is not covered for speakers, only the conference fee.

I know it stings when your papers are not accepted.  All of mine at Devoxx UK were declined this year, for example.  That doesn't stop me from submitting to other conferences.  Please continue to submit papers.  There are so many variables that come into play when selecting papers for a conference.  I don't take it personally.  I know it's a numbers game and they are looking to fill seats.

Good luck next time!

Kevin,

Statistically there are quite a lot more by corporate speakers. Otavio and I only submitted 2 and one is still on standby, so let's see, how that goes. I could use the Unconference day to meet fellow Spec Lead Jean-Marie. And if Heiko or others organize a Jakarta EE WG meeting in Ludwigsburg this fall, there's a good chance I could also participate in that.

I don't take anything personally, more an observation of corporate vs. non-corporate speakers in general as a true representative of the Community. I am Java track chair at DWX at the end of June, so in any case the month will be busy with conference days. I also propose talks here and there, but with projects that have contributors in many parts of the world like Units of Measurement, speaking at DevoXX UK or US was done by others while I spoke in Antwerp or also at DWX, so as an individual who cannot speak at every conference Divide and Conquer with other contributors helps to spread the word ;-)

I know, flights are not paid even for speakers btw, but for me in Germany getting to both EclipseCon events (only Ludwigsburg and Toulouse right now) is much easier than e.g. for Otavio in Brazil.

Btw. it's weird nobody seems to do Eclipse DemoCamps any more: https://wiki.eclipse.org/Eclipse_DemoCamp
The page "How to organize an Eclipse DemoCamp" is gone, the link isn't working.

Mostly while I worked in each part of the world I have quite a track record of demos from Sao Paulo, Trondheim, Copenhagen (where I organized one) to most major cities in Germany, Zurich, Vienna, Pune or Bangalore. I doubt many Individual committers got a chance to do that.

If there's anything related to MicroProfile at the Unconference, I'll be keen to attend.

Dear all,

We have booked a room at the EC France Unconference for MicroProfile and Jakarta EE.
What will happen in this room is definitely up to the community. We will be happy to help with promotion if you want to put together a more detailed agenda for the day.

I think you should make sure that you keep some time for open discussion.

The agenda for the Unconference will be published very soon on the website.

Best,
?

Hi Werner,

Being part of EclipseCon France programme committee, I can assure you that we did not mark talks differently just because the speaker is from a corporate. I am so pleased to say there are large number of submissions on MicroProfile and Jakarta EE. At the same time, we had to try very hard to turn down some good talks.

Yep. Great idea to come to Unconference day. Hope to see some great demos happening on Unconference Day!

Thanks

I have to check what's the state about our JNoSQL proposal.
As I continue to work in a Microservice environment, the client(s) may be happy if I attend that kind of event.
If it may not be possible at ECF then maybe in Ludwigsburg.
