Hi everyone,

Until now, we have been operating with a single mailing list, which works greats. On the other hand, with the growth of MicroProfile, we start to face a couple of challenges.

At this point, I believe we should create separate Mailing Lists per project/spec.

Right now, I feel that with a single ML, it is hard to track discussions of particular topics. Sometimes, topics get discussed in long threads and I have to go through all of them to find if there is anything I’m interested in. Don’t get me wrong, I think all the discussions happening are valid and bring value. I just feel that at this point, we should specialize a bit, and with specific Mailing Lists, we could have more focused conversations and even bring more contributors. Someone might be interested in spec X and be willing to be part of the conversation, but not necessarily be part of the full conversation.

When I look into this group, I see as more general discussion around MicroProfile and not about discussion specific, little details about spec X or Y. This usually happens over Github, and in my opinion, we end up losing a lot of information over there. Maybe it's just me, but it's very easy to miss the conversation over there and be left out :)

This doesn’t have to be a hard requirement for all specs. I’ll say, if a spec/project feels that it would be better for them to have a separate mailing list, they should be able to do it. If not, they can just continue to use this list.

Any thoughts?

Cheers,
Roberto

Sounds like a good idea.

The other thing that we could do is to be more judicious with the use of tagging.  If we ensured that we had an appropriate tag for each component within MicroProfile, then the threads could be filtered accordingly.  I noticed a couple of tags that start with "microproifle-", but we don't have all of the components represented in this manner.  This would allow our current usage of "one stop" shopping for MicroProfile discussions, while allowing filtering down to just "microprofile-config" if that's all you are interested in (as an example).

Do the tags get applied to emails? I don't think I've seen that, but I could be wrong.

Well, it's the thread that gets tagged.  So, as long as somebody would tag the conversation, then the emails would become part of that thread and be tagged in a sense.  But, individual emails getting tagged -- I doubt it.

We could try to standardize the subject lines "[METRICS] ....". Pros and cons.

Tags don’t come through on various mail clients so wouldn’t help address this problem, I don’t think.

Thank you Reberto for bringing this up here for discussion!

A bit more context on Config's requirement on sub mailinglist: at the moment, we need to flesh out some complicated problems with Config across different issues and it is hard to comment on individual issues. We need to have a communication channel for detailed nitty gritty technical conversation with all history logged so that later-comer can catch up with the conversation. Reberto brought this sub-mailinglist idea in MP-Config gitter. I think it is a good idea. Maybe we can create a sub mailinglist for Config to see how it goes. We should make the subgroup idea optional for other specs. Only create one if needed.

I know Jakarta EE have sub mailinglist per spec. It seems to work ok.

Thanks,
Emily

A rule which isn't known by someone outside the MP community and occasionally posts something

Con for multiple mailing lists

People do not know which mailing list is the best or the correct one to post to, mainly also an issue for occasional mailers (also seen with the Jakarta EE ones)

So very difficult to decide what is the best option.

+1! This mailinglist is for all general matters and discussions that does not fit in subgroup or impact more than one subgroups. If qustions more suitable for subgroups are posted here, we can redirect them to the suitable places.

Thanks

If you are going to try this out for Config, can I ask that you use the same prefix like we do for Marketing and Infra?  So, the name of the google group would be Eclipse MicroProfile Config.  This way, all of these groups would continue to be grouped together.

Agreed. I think a standard list name structure would help a lot here.

+1 to keeping up the MP naming standard as we have for general forum, Mktg and infra.

Lets use the tracing that Media inventory correctly has in place as an example:

Inventory Logistics helps to understand how truly scalable the project is. There is no 1 person that holds the keys to the project.

As such, I recommend that either we wait until the next Community call before anything gets implemented or whomever chooses to start a forum dedicated pilot, owns it via formal tracing to this forum and the .adoc that states how stuff is being implemented.

Since all of us support for the separate mailinglist proposed by Roberto, we have created the dedicated mailing list as follows.

Feel free to join and start collobrating on all MicroProfile Config related issues!

It looks like the Google Group is private? Is that intentional? Shouldn't it be open to all for reading even if they do not necessarily want to join? That's what it is for this one, right?

Each spec team needs to update various properties with mailing list info:
Personally, I'd  still like a subject tag of MP-<SPEC> if possible.

Team,

We need a git MP ticket to arrive to Mktg repo so that website can add a call to action to Subscribe that is the source of truth for old and new MicroProfilers.

Roberto, do you care to own such a follow up given that you are helping with this betterment? :)
