Hello dear community!

Here is another opportunity for a hackathon, this one involving the automotive industry and Java!

What if your next backend wasn't running in a data center — but in a car?

Java developers already know distributed systems, microservices, APIs, and event-driven architectures. Now put those skills somewhere new: the software-defined vehicle. Join the Eclipse SDV Hackathon Chapter 4 — October 6–8, 2026, in Friedrichshafen, Germany. Three days building, integrating, and breaking open source automotive software with the Eclipse SDV community.

Why Java developers belong here

Modern vehicles are distributed computing platforms: services across compute domains, software talking to hardware, and heterogeneous systems under real safety and performance constraints. That's familiar engineering territory:

  • Service-oriented architectures across vehicle compute platforms
  • APIs connecting applications to vehicle functions
  • Distributed communication between services and controllers
  • Cloud-to-vehicle and vehicle-to-cloud architectures
  • Event-driven systems and telemetry
  • Testing, observability, and debugging distributed systems
  • Moving code from virtual environments into embedded systems and real vehicles

Bring Java, Jakarta EE, Spring, Quarkus, REST/gRPC, messaging, cloud-native experience — no automotive background required.

Two ways to participate:

  • Hackathon Track — Application & Innovation: build on pre-integrated SDV technologies (Eclipse S-CORE, OpenBSW, OpenSOVD), focused on application and UX.
  • Freestyle Track — Integration & Feature Development: go deeper — new features, interfaces, and components within the SDV projects themselves.

You'll work alongside project maintainers, Hack Coaches, and automotive engineers — inspecting real code, prototyping APIs, testing against actual constraints, and (where applicable) running on embedded hardware and real vehicles.

Your first SDV contribution doesn't have to start with a car. It can start with Java.
