I know this is somewhat last minute, but has or is anyone submitting to Devoxx UK on MicroProfile?

I'm going to be submitting some sessions and if no one has proposed a MicroProfile I will look to submit on that also.

Or if anyone is interested in doing a joint session or BOF, let me know

I'm going to submit a similar Microprofile.io talk, which I gave at W-JAX this year: Video recording, (slides)
I wouldn't mind if anyone joins me with this session - it can be easily split into 2 parts (general JavaEE and MicroProfile).

I'm interested in any other joint session or BOF too.

One hasn't been submitted a few weeks ago, I was contacted to submit one, but I passed it onto Kevin Sutter as I was snowed under at the time. I totally agree there needs to be one.

Given that we kind of kicked off the whole collaborative effort announcement at it last year it'd be our one year anniversary too, so I hope the organisers see the benefit to the event.

Hi Ken,

I'll definitely join the BOF if any of my talks are accepted.

I'm planning to submit a MP talk myself, but if you don't mind that I join your talk, we can submit one together. I gave my talk at W-JAX already (Video recording, slides), we may do something similar or go with your talk, I don't mind.

Let me know what you think.

Hi,
Today is the last day to submit talks for Devoxx UK.  http://cfp.devoxx.co.uk/

I just submitted a general request for a MicroProfile Panel discussion.  We can fill in who will be representing MP when it gets accepted (like my confidence?).

Ken, were you going to submit the BOF request?  That would also be good to have.  If you don't have the cycles, let me know and I'll submit it.

And, it sounds like we're going to have a few other individual sessions submitted from various MP participants.  Sounds good!

Thanks, Kevin

What does the MicroProfile Panel discussion come under as a submission type? Would that not be a BOF?

If it's not, then yes I'll be looking to submit a BOF shortly. As well as a talk with Ondrej/Mark

I was thinking a Panel would be more general, allowing newbies to learn about MicroProfile.  A BOF would be more specific to the content of microprofile.  Along the lines to what we did for JavaOne.

Hi Ken,

I'd be happy to submit the talk with you then. Doing the talk with you perfectly fits, as the talk focuses on WF Swarm and Payara Micro already.

My current abstract is here (it slightly differs from the one I used for the W-JAX, which is visible under the video at vimeo):

MicroProfile.io: A quest for a lightweight and modern enterprise Java platform

Do you still think that Java EE is heavy-weight, cumbersome and doesn’t keep up with modern trends? Then let’s explore the Java EE world to find out how Java EE has improved a lot since the old J2EE days. I’ll show you that there are already production-ready enterprise and opensource solutions to bring more flexibility than the traditional Java EE servers from the past. Many major vendors, including IBM, Red Hat and Payara, strive to provide lightweight and extensible runtimes to power microservices, cloud deployments and reactive architectures already. Their individual efforts are naturally followed by an open collaboration within the MicroProfile.io initiative.

I invite you to join the adventure with me and follow the quest for a new generation enterprise Java platform. We will explore what has happened recently in the world of enterprise Java, including the progress of the future Java EE specifications, and the features already provided by some interesting open-source projects. Afterward, we will discover what the MicroProfile.io initiative is and how its future direction can be formed even with your contribution. All illustrated by live coding and demonstrations.

The presentation has 2 parts - Java EE now and future (with Payara Micro and WF Swarm examples, and comparison to SpringBoot), and MicroProfile as a "natural" evolution for microservices.

It's not much time left, so let me know soon :)

Ondrej

Hi Ondrej

I would maybe adjust it to be:

Eclipse MicroProfile: A quest for a lightweight and modern enterprise Java platform

Do you still think that Java EE is heavy-weight, cumbersome and doesn’t keep up with modern trends? Then let’s explore the Java EE world to find out how Java EE has improved a lot since the old J2EE days. Mostly changing MicroProfile.io to Eclipse MicroProfile.

I'm just heading to lunch, so either you can submit and add me as joint speaker (k...@kenfinnigan.me) or I will submit after lunch. I think Mark Little was also interested in participating in the session too, if you could add him.

After lunch I'll submit the BOF with everyone as well.

Thanks, Ken.

I'll submit myself and add you as a speaker. I'll add Mark too, if 3 speakers are allowed.
Mark, is that right you'd like to join the talk too?

While reading the abstract again, I realized that it's probably better not mentioning any vendor by name in the abstract, so that it doesn't look like a commercial talk. I also corrected the first sentence, I think it makes more sense now (removed a lot, add much). I replaced all singulars (I) by plurals (we).

Here is what I propose now (my recent changes in bold):

Do you still think that Java EE is heavy-weight, cumbersome and doesn’t keep up with modern trends? Then let’s explore the Java EE world to find out how much Java EE has improved since the old J2EE days. We’ll show you that there are already production-ready enterprise and opensource solutions to bring more flexibility than the traditional Java EE servers from the past. Here's my proposed abstract for the BOF:

Eclipse MicroProfile: Enterprise Java Microservices, one year on

Eclipse MicroProfile is bridging the gap between Enterprise Java and Microservices, fostered through open collaboration of the Enterprise Java community. Though still being in its infancy, great strides have been taken already with many more to follow.

The BOF will briefly cover what has been achieved in the first year since inception, and also cover upcoming releases and proposals being worked on in the community. Most of the BOF will be our panel answering questions from you, the community, about where Eclipse MicroProfile is heading and general discussion of ideas that the community considers important for Eclipse MicroProfile.

Hi,

We are going to have the MicroProfile panel tomorrow at Devoxx UK.

Do we have any plans?
Is Ken going to moderate the discussion?
Is someone going to present some slides? E.g. the canonical slide deck or Kevin's slides with the roadmap?

I just think that we should introduce the discussion somehow, present the current status and future vision, and not only jump into the discussion.

Shall we meet tomorrow before the session? Have lunch together maybe, at 1pm? I haven't been to Devoxx before so I can't suggest a good place to meet at the venue, maybe at one of the boths? Let's say at Red Hat?

Hi

I think a quick meetup before the session is a good idea if you're all free - I would certainly find it useful. 1pm works for me. My first talk is at 1.45pm, and I have a big stack of raspberry pis to plugin and check, so I'll need to be at conference setting that up at 1.30pm.

Yep. Having a quick meetup is a good idea. Let's meet over lunch and also arrive early at the Auditorium e.g. @2:35. I am ok to meet up at 1pm. Shall we meet at Mad Scientist stand at 1pm and then find somewhere to sit and continue lunch?

I have brought some of the hoodies we gave out at JavaOne in case panel members or audience want them.

Mark.

I was out last week, so my comments will not apply to the Devoxx UK discussion...  But, we do need to recognize and promote the Eclipse MicroProfile site as well as microprofile.io (reference chart 15).  Yes, we did indicate that we moved to the Eclipse Foundation on chart 3.  But, no where in the chart deck did we reference the Eclipse MP portal:

https://projects.eclipse.org/projects/technology.microprofile

Since that's where the real code resides, we need to create more awareness of that project.

Thanks, Kevin
