Could someone make light of this for me?

Page 326 Table 11-1 "Costs at Selena's Gourmet Salsas"
I understand the first column and the second column is the daily cost of food preparation which is fixed (overhead cost) @ $108.00, but what is the variable cost? I was trying to figure out the pattern and couldn't find out what it meant. Does this mean the price per salsa bottle? (Ie at 1 bottle of salsa = $12.00, at  2 bottles of salsa = $48.00?) I couldn't think of it any other way but I didn't think it made sense to jump from 12 to 48 dollars for 2 bottles of salsa. Have I confused anyone yet? lol

Please let me know your thoughts once you have finished with your reading,
Thank you
