Hi,

I've got a USB CD/DVD drive that is recognised by my MicroclientJrDX
(eBox-3300). The boot messages show it, and also shows a message "USB
DVDRW SATA 8X8X5X", but a CD/DVD won't boot.

I've set the BIOS as per the recommendation in this post:

http://groups.google.com/group/microclient/browse_thread/thread/e484731786825b52/7b64dfec7082c1ce?lnk=gst&q=usb+cd#7b64dfec7082c1ce

The CD/DVD just seems to continually seek. I'm wondering if the USB
port doesn't pass enough current to power the drive ?

I know the drive and my boot CD/DVD's are OK as it all works as it
should on a Dell Poweredge SC430.

Anyone with any ideas ?

Bryan

How many cables go from the DVD to eBox-3300?
Does it have only USB cable, or also power cable?
If it has power cable as well, make sure you plug it into external
power source.
Also try to change BIOS settings for USB from HighSpeed to FullSpeed.
Let me know if something out of this helped.
The above actions worked for me.

BIOS is set to Full Speed. I get a message "Reboot and Select proper
Boot device".

F11 only gives the option to boot from DVD.

In BIOS Advanced -> USB Configuration -> USB Mass Storage Device
Configuration, lists

Device #1 DVDRW SATA 8X8X5X

and I have set Emulation Type to CDROM (also tried Auto).

The AOpen brand DVD drive is powered via the USB cable, no external
power, so there is only the one cable. I can hear the DVD trying to
seek, so I guess there is some incompatibility with the drive. I might
see if I can get hold of a different one.

Thanks,

Try to find a different DVD that will have power cable as well.
You may also try a Y-shape USB cable (that has 2 USB connectors at the
side of PC, and 1 connector at the side of the DVD).

Hi:

Which OS are you trying to boot from CD/DVD?
If you are trying something Linux-based, you may want to check unetbootin, a utility that will install a CD/DVD ISO image onto an external USB thumb drive with bootloader and everything. You provide the ISO image, select the partition corresponding to your USB drive and run. Windows 7 can also be installed from a USB stick, the procedure is rather simple and only needs another machine running Windows to prepare the stick.
XP is rather tricky to install from a USB stick though.

Unetbootin

You're a genius :)

I thought it might be a power problem, and now have plugged a Y cable
in as you suggested, and it boots ! Fantastic.

Thanks for you're help.

For other's with this problem, another option would be simply to use a
powered usb hub.
