With extreme heat expected across southeast Michigan this week, it's important to take extra precautions to stay safe. Older adults are especially vulnerable to heat-related illnesses, making it essential to stay cool, hydrated, and connected.

Heat Safety Tips

💧 Drink water regularly, even if you don't feel thirsty (unless your doctor has advised you to limit fluids).

🏠 Spend time in air-conditioned spaces whenever possible. If your home becomes too warm, consider visiting a local cooling center.

👕 Wear lightweight, light-colored clothing and avoid strenuous outdoor activities during the hottest parts of the day.

🚨 Know the warning signs of heat-related illness, including:

  • Dizziness or weakness
  • Confusion
  • Headache
  • Nausea
  • Muscle cramps
  • Fainting

🤝 Check in on older family members, friends, and neighbors. A simple phone call or visit can make all the difference during periods of extreme heat.
