Deaf Matters Initiative
"Deaf Matters-It's a Civil Rights Issue!"

This is a one (1) day training for Social Workers, Human Service Providers, Political Officials, Health Care Providers, Spiritual Leaders and Community Members is designed to discuss
strengths, barrier, challenges and issues related to Deaf and Hard of Hearing and Deaf Blind (DHHDB) individuals. Also to bring about improved awareness of the (DHHDB) community and culture. In addition to discuss effective ways to mutually include (DHHDB)
individuals in the "hearing" community to promote community organizing and provide culturally responsive services.

Elder Curtis Young, Elder Curtis Young was born hearing in Detroit, Mi. and gradually began to lose his hearing at the age of 8. He is the first Black Deaf ordained minister in the State of
Michigan. A member of Second Ebenezer Church, Detroit, he is the leader of Curtis Young Ministries where he preach/teach the Word of God here and nationally to both Deaf and Hearing congregations. Elder Young has over 25 years of Deaf Ministry experience.
Additionally he has been employed with the City of Detroit Water Department in various capacities for the last 20 years. It is his desire to share his knowledge and experiences of Deaf and Hard of Hearing persons so that the Hearing community can be educated
and have a better understanding of who we are. Elder Young will briefly but clearly show the what, why, and how of meeting the spiritual needs of the DHHDB community.

Teddy Dorsette III is a Detroit Born Deaf filmmaker. He was
educated at the University of Michigan where he received his BA in Screen Arts and Cultures. Currently, Teddy is a production team member of (D-PAN) Deaf Professional Arts Network and D-PAN TV/DTV NEWS . He also is the Co-founder of TeddyBoy Entertainment
LLC, a production company alongside his late father Ted Dorsette II. He enjoys being a role model in the community, as he founded Reel Def Entertainment, a non-profit organization that focuses on providing youths and adults opportunities to pursue their dreams
in the Entertainment Industry, by providing workshops (Acting, Dancing, Film/TV production, Graphic Design, Etc), Teddy is also the current youngest President of Detroit Black Deaf Advocates (DBDA) serving his first term. Being a believer of collaboration
and networking he serves on the Board of Deaf Solutions. Following his love of sports, he is also the Team Manager for the Great Lakes Warriors Men's Deaf/HOH basketball team.
