Ola' All, Thanks much for input on outboards. Keep it small seems to
be the theme. I've got an elderly Cruise n' Carry 1.5hp and a 4 hp
Evinrude, both 2 stroke. I'll give them both a try although I think
the 1.5 will be too small. Used to use it on a dinghy for transport.
Noisy thing. Excuse me Chad for calling you Chip and Minnesota,
Michigan. I did get the info on your boat right. So anyway, does
anybody have an opinion (dumb question) on wheel steering for the
Laguna? I've seen some variations on the tiller from Chuck and Mike on
the net. Are all else going as drawn behind the mast? I'm not a huge
fan of wheels but this seems to be a situation where it might be OK. I
thought of stickin' it on Bulkhead 19. Thoughts?

Chuck and Mike seem to be quite happy with their tiller devices although they are quite different.  Chuck steers from the aft compartment Mike from either side of 11.5.
I just use a line running around the boat running through pulley at each corner.  When I want to leave the tiller I put a clove hitch on the end of the tiller.  Then I can steer it form any point on the boat.  Even sitting on the bow.  I try to keep things as simple as possible and still work, well.
The first question is....where do you want to sit to steer the boat?  Then the questions/answers fall into place.

I like John’s rope steering a lot and if someone had not given me a beautiful, laminated wood tiller for the boat I probably would have used that system. I have sailed boats with rope steering and find it much easier to use than a push/pull pole, sometimes called Norwegian, tiller.  I don’t see why a wheel would not work just fine, though.

The ropes; I like the ropes....light, fast and replaceable. John, did you simply build the tiller as shown and then attach?

Ed, Tiller as per plan! Easy to add the rope...or remove it.  I tried just four nylon fairleads....it did NOT work by a long way....just way too much friction.  The Racelite pulleys worked very well.  There are a number that would work. Any size of rope/pulleys would work...although larger rope is comfortable in you hand.
I have tried to figure out a small simple jam cleat that would work.  It would need to work each way and line up perpendicular to the tiller.... Cutting one of Chucks nylon jam cleats into and mounting it sideways would just allow you to just wrap the line one time....rather than a clove hitch.  The line needs to be slightly drooping so that you have enough line to make that wrap or clove.

Ed, I've done some thinking about this but haven't really come to any
conclusions yet. Rob Rohde-Szudy wrote some articles on it for
Duckworks. I'm most interested in the "Monkey stick" design. (Which
is rather similar to Johns simple lines.) I'm leaning towards Mike's
layout with a stick or wheel at bulkhead 11.5. I plan to make my
pilot station in the middle to have decent access to most lines for
single handing. (As I don't think my kids will make decent mates fro
another 5 yrs, or so.)

Keep me apprised of what solution you chose to go with.

Also, no worries about displacing me to Michigan, I just wanted to
make sure that I didn't have more competition for lucky siete.

They'll fool you. My daughter was on the tiller at the age of four. Direction was a bit shaky, but she was steering the thing.

I tried with little success to do the rope thing. I suspect my
geometry was off. It was very stiff, really unusable. I also did a
wheel. What I found immediately was that the sheets and forward
halyard found that wheel a lot! I do like sitting towards the center,
and I think I will try the rope again. But don't be concerned with
single-handing from the stock tiller. It works just fine.

Gordo,
The rope worked very well for me.....  I ran mine from four pulleys on the deck just inside the gunnels just forward of the fore mast and just aft of the aft mast.  The rope draped on each side about a foot or so until I put the clove hitch on the end of the tiller.  I put it forward of the front mast so that I could reach it while sitting on and straddling the bow.  The pulleys must be very freewheeling and the rope must not be too big for them.  Any drag is multiplied by four times...
I need to figure out how to steer while "standing" on the bow so that I can read shallow water better.  A couple of feet more altitude above the water helps a lot.
I must run the rope outside of the masts because the masts fold down on the floor.  You sailed your Laguna very well and fast on the way to Army Hole.

Parts Left out cost nothing and cause no service problems. Tillers let me feel what the boat is doing. TA

Yeah John I think my rope was too large, my geometry aft was a
problem, and the rope was also very stiff. I'll be trying some new
ideas, as I'm not really happy with anything I've seen yet.

Maybe add a couple of lines or a longer "half" loop hitched to the
original loop about amidships so that you can hold one tail in each
hand as you stand on the bow?

Thanks for that Andrew..Andy?
That would work well and you got me thinking.
When maneuvering and docking the tiller needs to move quit a bit but when just steering very little movement is necessary

Your answer solution eliminated extra line laying on the deck dragging back and forth.  I don't want to add any more friction.... but I could just make the line about 4' longer than for normal operation, on the side of the boat where it just drapes freely  and just tie a truckers knot to take up the slack.  Untie it when needed.

Good to have two answers to choose from.

Thanks,
