Pivoting masts

Seeing St. John's Laguna with his ability to drop the masts inside the
boat, then Chuck's Caprice with it's unstayed, tabernacle mast, gave
me an idea: What is the masts of the Laguna were tabernacled so they
can be left in the boat for storage?
The masts would stay in the boat and all the sails and rigging would
remain attached. To launch, you'd just stand the masts up, put in the
bolt to keep them in place, hoist sail, and go.
When traveling, just fold the masts down (put a seat cushion under the
end so it doesn't rub on the floor)
When storing, lash the masts together so they form a beam, drape a
tarp over the beam to keep rainwater out.

A couple of 8ft 2x4s, some 1x4, a few screws and (4) 7" 3/8 bolts, 3"
fender washers, and nuts and you are in business.

You can see my concept in the Files section, under Laguna_pivot.gif

Andrew,
That is a great idea...
That deserves the Laguna Gold Star Award.
That should be included in Jim's plan as an option.
I store the boat upside down with a tarp over it.  My  BB approach of redundancy.  Belt and Braces.

I like it. The only downside is that you lose the option to set one sail
amidships. But I can't tell you how much I like the tabernacle on the
Caprice.

I have a tabernacle mast on my Weekender - effing GREAT. I don't like
how they did it, though. This seems to make more sense to me. Now:
About that center mast position, how was that? as far as I know, you
are the only one to ever have sailed it that way. You'd have to be in
a heck of a gale to need to drop down to just one mast.

Also, I've been against Bulkhead 11.5 from the start.

I like it Andrew. I keep my sails/sticks all together already and
love that part, not sail rigging at all. Being able to just lay them
Down sounds even better!!!!! I have this feeling I'll be modifying
Uno very soon, I can't believe I didn't think of that sooner!!!!!

It worked fine - very easy to manage in the 15mph or so of wind that
afternoon. But I talked to Jim quite a bit about making the forward cockpit
into a slot top cabin. Add the tabernacles and that makes a lot of sense.
I'll send him your drawing and see what he says.

Set a roller staysail that would look just like a jib but set between the two masts.  It could be as large as 90sf or rolled it to nothing.  The /CR/CE balance will be close to correct.  I just built a roller that will be permanently mounted to the frame to the left of the fore mast....as soon as the rain stops...  I have two halyards on the aft mast so that all three sails can be flown in really light wind.  Of course the boat can not tack with it in place but it will go up or down quickly.  The staysail can be used with just the aft mast up.  The sail plan on one tack "can" be 240 sf.
I hope to finish building the boat in another week-or two including a dolly that will store in the bow locker.  Gotta make it easily movable for this old man.

I consulted with Jim to get this - I figured he designed your Caprice
setup. Jon and I had hours to talk about the Laguna and how someone
might play with a cabin design. I decided to focus on ease of storage
and launch.

One thing about your folding mast idea is that it creates a really nice
place to hang a huge cockpit tent. In boats of a certain size that is a
better option than a permanent cabin.
