It's strange that it's already needed, but I've beat that poor boat up
so bad! I guess that's what i get for actually using her ;-)

Along with a new coat of paint she is being re-rigged with old gear
off my Irwin 28. (The Irwin needs new stuff) I've rigged the halyards
for instant dropping (before I had them on regular cleats) and the
forward sail can be raised and lowered from the aft cockpit. I added
cam cleats instead of clams on the sheets because the clams get REALLY
stuck in heavy conditions.

I completely enclosed the front benches like the aft, closed in the
center section, and basically made a water tight locker in the center
of the boat. I also added a big chunk of white oak to the bow where I
keep finding things to hit, plus it will act as a holder for the
anchor line (I bet there's a word...). One more task is going to be a
way to set the anchor from aft, though idk how yet.

My only concern is the hatches forward and aft. I have tried several
things and I'm still unhappy. Looking at some whole new options
including something with wingnuts. May take time to get into, but
better that then water getting into the boat.

It's called an "anchor rode" and there are several ways to set it from the
aft end of the boat. Probably the easiest is to run the rode aft and carry
the anchor in the back - just make sure you clear everything when you drop
the anchor and that the rode gets away cleanly. I once helped Charlie Jones
rescue a guy who had thrown his anchor out and got the rode fouled on a
cleat on the stern. This was near Pass Cavallo and the tide was running out
about 4 or 5 mph! He was in serious danger of having water come up over his
transom and sinking the boat. When we got there only inches of freeboard
remained.

The rode is the rope. What is that thing called on the front of the boat where the rode runs through.

Yeah, anchor roller sans roller! Anyway, She's looking really good.
I've had hell to keep myself from taking her out, I want to try out my
new rigging! But I want the paint to cure as long ass possible.
Basically I'm at the packing point. I have 2 very small and totally
optional tasks, but mostly trying to decide what to take and what to
leave. One problem with one guy in a 23 foot boat is that I COULD
take the kitchen sink...but I know I shouldn't!!!! Ah well, it's all
good....worst case the sink would make a good backup anchor.

The good news is that one guy in a 23" boat should be faster than two guys
in a 23" boat.
