So, if one were to skip the butt blocks and use glass tape, would one
still "hollow out" the 1/4" ply to recess the glass or simply slap it
on and deal with the cosmetics later? I'd rather just use the tape but
am loathe to remove any of the ply as it is so thin. I've had success
with the Payson Heavy glass joint, but that was in 1/2".

I use payson joints in 1/4" ply all the time (including on my Laguna) and
never hollow. I do use some fairing compound to fill the weave and feather
the edges.

Thanks Chuck. That seems to me to be the way to go. I was hesitant to remove any of the ply. Tell me, do you do one side and then flip it or both at once? I've enough anxiety doing decent glasswork when it's right in front of my face, let alone under two pieces of wood. Ed

I always do them one side at a time. The hard part is turning over three sheets that are only joined on one side. I seem to remember ripping the plywood into 2’ widths and joining them that way for the sides. For the bottom I did use butt joints but I arranged them so that they ended up under the middle, bow and stern closed areas and out of sight. To do that I just cut one bottom sheet (I used 5/8” Yellow Pine) in half and put the halves on opposite ends. That put a joint in the middle under the center mast position and one toward either end.
