SUBMISSION OF ERROR FREE DISSERTATIONS
DEAR ALL,
1. THE ongoing external and internal examination process for graduate
students’ dissertations is proving fruitful as students are getting
invaluable comments. We wish to appreciate the input by both internal and
external examiners for a job well done hitherto.
2. THE postgraduate office has however noted that SOME students submit
their supposedly error free dissertations/ theses without “effecting” the
comments received from examiners. Supervisors are reminded that they need
to ensure that the students THEY SUPERVISE appropriately incorporate
comments provided.
3. BESIDES, submitted dissertations are found wanting is such areas as
(1) INCOMPLETENESS OF REFERENCE LIST, (2) TYPOGRAPHICAL AND GRAMMATICAL
ERRORS; (3) ERRONEOUS REFERENCING OF THE CITED WORKS ETC. UDBS have tended
to largely adopt the APA REFERENCING FORMAT for academic publications.
PLEASE ADVISE STUDENTS TO USE THE SAME FORMAT.
4. STUDENTS are ALSO advised to observe the POSTGRADUATE GUIDELINE
CLAUSE 12:3 regarding PROOF-READING AND EDITING OF THESES AND
DISSERTATIONS:
12.3.1 Candidates should ensure that the written dissertation and thesis
demonstrates a high standard of proof–reading and copy editing (including
attention to layout, spelling, grammar, sentence structure). The
thesis/dissertation should be checked for accuracy, including references,
cross–references and sequences of numbers. Figures, diagrams and tables
must be numbered sequentially in the manuscript.
12.3.2 Candidates should note that, as a general rule, supervisors are not
expected to edit a dissertation or thesis. If a thesis/dissertation
requires editing, the supervisor(s) may advise the candidate of the need
and, if appropriate, give advice on where to obtain help with
typographical proof–reading and editing.
I WISH YOU ALL THE BEST
