Hello MIAPA folks,
As some of you may already know, NSF has recently awarded three
projects submitted after last year's AVAToL RFP. One is the Open Tree
of Life project (
http://opentreeoflife,com), which aims to synthesize
published phylogenetic trees (plus taxonomic data) into a
comprehensive tree of life.
When collecting input source trees, we also want to collect metadata
about the trees to help inform the synthesis methods. Our hope is to
come up with some definition of what metadata constitutes a Good
(minimum) / Better / Best level of annotation for an input tree. We
are just starting the discussion, and would ideally like to work with
the MIAPA group to figure out how to best define these annotation
levels (both the means of collecting feedback and from whom). We could
do this on a small scale initially for Open Tree, or as part of a
wider MIAPA community survey.
