Chinese Character Canon
Chinese characters are notoriously difficult to learn because of their unique, pictographic nature, but the Chinese Character Canon (CCC) solves this problem by being the first Chinese-teaching syllabus to directly incorporate the most widely used Chinese characters into poems that, when turned into songs, can be a highly effective teaching instrument.
The CCC is an unorthodox and amazingly effective system for teaching and learning Chinese characters. The CCC, a curriculum research project of the Language Research Institute (under the Ministry of Education of the People’s Republic of China), is based on 3,755 basic characters from the national standard Chinese character fonts, 2,905 frequently used characters from the HSK (the Chinese Proficiency Test) syllabus, and 3,500 frequently used characters issued by the State Council of the People’s Republic of China. The All-China Federation of Returned Overseas Chinese (an organization founded in 1950 to represent and protect the interests and rights of returned Chinese, their families, and overseas Chinese) has selected the CCC as the official Chinese textbook for all overseas Chinese.
The CCC was developed in consultation with a number of psychologists, linguists, and educators to create educational materials that could expedite character recognition and allow for earlier literacy among children. Learning Chinese through the CCC consists of the following steps: character memorization and recognition; the transfer of character recognition to media other than poems; and finally the application of the aforementioned steps to students’ daily lives and conversations.
Essentially, the CCC is a long poem composed of 4,000 non-repeating characters and is organized into sections by topic. In particular, each line rhymes. Akin to a mini-encyclopaedia, the poem covers 99% of modern Chinese and 50 fields of knowledge (including astronomy, geography, ethics, philosophy, history, politics, economics, education, science and technology, sports, and architecture). Each part of the CCC is used to impart knowledge. Further, each character in the CCC can refer to an object; each phrase, an event; each sentence, an allusion; and each section, a period of Chinese history.
After learning this poem within a short period of time, the student can sing all 4,000 Chinese characters to a lively tune and thus master all frequently used Chinese characters while enjoying the rich cultural background and story behind each line. Further, the student will be able to string together Chinese phrases and acquire correct intonations and pronunciations while learning fun facts and stories from various interdisciplinary fields through the content of poems.
It is well known that learning Chinese is difficult. In the Philippines, students are typically not fluent Chinese speakers even after 13 years of Chinese education in local Chinese schools. However, with the CCC, which integrates character recognition, the stringing of words into phrases, the acquisition of accurate character intonations, and knowledge of encyclopaedic facts, our students will typically master frequently used Chinese characters within only 4 to 6 months. In this way, the CCC has effectively solved the nearly hundred-year-old problem of Chinese literacy.

"Chinese Character Canon" Introduction
Chinese characters are often criticized for being overly complex relative to other language system. One reason for the added complexity is the different information content of the characters. Roman letters give relatively precise information on pronunciation, but no information on meaning. In contrast, Chinese characters give less precise (and sometimes no) pronunciation information, but do give information on meaning. How many Chinese characters a native Chinese speaker should learn for daily life? China Education Ministry requires students to master 2,540 Chinese characters after elementary school, 2,905 after junior high school, and 3,755 after 12th grade of high school.
For basic Chinese reading, it requires at least 2,000 characters. No phonics to help, you have to remember and know so many characters. Tough, Isn't it? Should you take 6~12 years to master these 2,500~3,755 characters? "Yes." - This is what most of the Chinese people do. But our answer is "NO"!
With "Chinese Character Canon", it only takes you one or two years to grasp 4,000 characters!

It is hard for me to believe that a five year's old can learn all 4000 Chinese characters within 10 month if this did not become a reality for my son Hudson. Before learning "Chinese Character Canon", Hudson knew less than one hundred characters and was not able to read any children's book on his own. In August 2004, just past his 5th birthday, we started to teach Hudson "Chinese Character Canon" at home. My husband and I both had full time job at that time and the teaching usually took place after suppers. We taught him three or four times a week, and 16 to 32 characters within a thirty minute session. Upon completion of the first volume of the text (1000 characters), the effectiveness was not very distinct, and Hudson was still unable to read on his own. But after he completed the second volume (2000 characters), he succeeded to the next stage learning "Comprehensive Reading" for independent reading training and the his reading ability started to improve at a leaping pace. As Hudson completed the third volume (3000 characters), we happened to find that Hudson could read adult Bible and he actually finished the first chapter of "Genesis" at a burst. Thereafter, his reading interest was highly motivated. For any articles matching his understanding and interest, the child would read them with great pleasure. Within total 10 months of learning, Hudson completed all of four volumes of "Chinese Character Canon" with a total vocabulary of 4,000 characters and four volumes of "Comprehensive Reading" with more than 300,000 characters. Since then, he has read many Chinese books such as Bible, scientific fictions, novels, ancient poetry and prose, etc.
The difficulty in learning Chinese characters has been troubling almost every overseas Chinese family. From our own experience, I believe "Chinese Character Canon" provides a short-cut of quickly mastering Chinese characters and reading skills, which saves a lot of time, money, and pain for kids and parents. It is also a good news for schools and teachers who are looking for a more effective way of teaching Chinese. In November 2006, "Chinese Character Canon" was first formally introduced to the US market by the Miktam of Chinese International Inc. and has been warmly received by many Chinese schools and individuals across the US. Many Chinese school teachers have been trained with the unique teaching theory and methodology. Several licensed Teaching Bases have been established. Numerous individuals including adults and non-heritages learners have started to use "Chinese Character Canon" materials to study Chinese at home. Hopefully, in the near future, we can hear a lot of successful testimonies like Hudson's story.
