The subject of this meet-up: 2009 Florida International Chinese Speech Contest preparation
You will do, or watch others do, a mock speech contest before the real contest. You will receive scores for your speech. You will receive instruction on how to have a successful speech in the contest.
There were 7 participants from the Miami Chinese Corner in the last year Chinese speech contest and all of them won among over 80 contestants. One of them also won a scholarship to study overseas. If you really want to win the contest, you don't want to miss the opportunity for the mock contest. Please get ready for making a speech at the corner.

FYI. Introduction to the Chinese contest
The 3rd Annual Florida International Chinese Speech Contest will be held on April 5, 2009
from 12-4pm in Greene Library 100 at FIU University Park Campus.
The contest will have five levels (I–V) depending on the level of Chinese course contestants
are currently enrolled in. For non-FIU contestants, the appropriate level can be determined
by checking the New Practical Chinese Reader textbook(s) (Level I: Lesson 1-9; Level II:
Lesson 10-16; Level III: Lesson 17-21; Level IV: Lesson 22-26; Level V: Lesson 27-31).
Those books can be found in the FIU bookstore. Native speakers are disqualified for this
contest. Contestants who have lived in China for more than one year are entered for a
separate level – Level 6.
Contestants will compete within their own level on topics of personal choice. On the day of
the contest, please arrive on time. Contestants may bring notes or outlines with them.
However, no script or notes will be allowed on stage.
The length of speech for each level is as follows: Level I: 1 minute; Level II: 1.5 minutes;
Level III: 2 minutes; Level IV: 2.5 minutes; Level V: 3 minutes; Level 6: 3 minutes. Any
presentations shorter than the lower boundary of the set time will cause loss of points; any
presentations past the higher boundary of the set time will be stopped by the time keeper,
and no penalty will be assessed.
Four to five independent judges will evaluate contestants’ speeches based on grammar,
vocabulary, fluency, pronunciation and intonation, and organization and development of the
topic. Judges’ decisions will be final. No one may enter or leave while the speech is in
session. There will be an award ceremony at the end of the contest. Winners will receive
grand prizes and recognition.
The contest will serve as a preliminary for the 8th Chinese Proficiency Competition for
Foreign College Students and the 2nd Chinese Proficiency Competition for Foreign High
School Students which will be held in China from July 9th to August 7th and October 16th to
30th respectively. For Competition information and topics, please visit
www.chinesebridge.org.
The registration form must be sent by mail/email to Professor Ma Li, University Park DM
494, 11200 SW8 ST, Miami, FL 33199 by March 20, 2009. A copy of your speech (to
ensure proper placement) must be mailed/emailed to Professor Ma Li no later than March
31, 2009. Failure to do so may result in the invalidation of any award you may receive.
The event is free to all FIU students. For non-FIU contestants, there will be a registration
fee
of $25. Public school contestants receive a 50% discount. Please make
check payable to Florida International University. Please note only
contestants who pre-register will be able to participate. If you have

FYI. Introduction to the Miami Chinese Language Corner:
This corner was created on May 5th, 2007 by Tao 'Tonny' Liu,
a native Chinese from Shanghai, China and a Chinese Language teacher with
the Contemporary Chinese School of South Florida since 2003 and Miami Dade
College since 2005. It's the only live Chinese corner in the United States of
America, which offers a real time linguistic environment for students to
practice Chinese in South Florida without having to be living in mainland
China, Hong Kong, Macau, Taiwan, Singapore, or Malaysia. Now there are over
1500 students in Miami-Dade county learning Chinese! And there are nearly 500 members of the Miami Chinese Language Corner!
There were 7 corner participants in 2008 and 10 corner participants in 2009 winning the 1st, 2nd, 3rd or 4th place in Miami International Chinese Speech Contest.
Participants will meet up once a month for 3 hours. During the meet-up,
- You will learn Chinese expressions in daily topic

- You will talk to each other in Chinese
- You will improve your pronunciation of Chinese words
- You will listen to others talking in Chinese
- You will have Chinese teacher(s) or those who are fluent in Chinese on site
helping you practice spoken Chinese
- You will get your authentic Chinese name if you don't have one yet
- You will correct your Chinese writings
- You will receive free material such as 201 Chinese radicals, 1500 most used Chinese words, and 150 basic Chinese sentences.

We are going to hold the July 2014 Chinese corner meet-up on FIU South Campus (Modesto A. Maidique Campus - formally University Park) GC (Graham Center) (also see attached map).
At the meet-up, Dr. Vince Yu will help us learn about Chinese culture by volunteering in presenting a short talk/discussion about Chinese medicine. Dr. Yu got his MD in Tianjin, China where he was born and completed his Acupuncture/Chinese Medicine degree in Nanjing before he came to New York for medical education. He then graduated from NYIT with doctor degree in medicine. He completed his post-doc residency training in internal medicine. He is also a licensed acupuncturist in addition to being a licensed physician from State of New York.
All of you, including your family, your friends, you acquaintances and your students are welcome to the free meet-up for fun and Chinese culture exposure.
We are also going to give away free Chinese gifts to up to 10 of the attendees at the meet-up.

This corner was created on May 5th, 2007 by Tao 'Tonny' Liu, a native Chinese from Shanghai China
and a Chinese Language teacher with the Miami Dade College and the Contemporary Chinese School of South Florida.
Participants will meet once each month for one and half hours. The CCSSF branch and other school branches of

This corner was created on May 5th, 2007 by Tao "Tonny" Liu, a native Chinese from Shanghai, China and a then Mandarin instructor of Miami Dade College. To our knowledge, it's the only live Chinese corner in the United States of America, which offers a real time linguistic environment for anyone to learn and practice Chinese in South Florida without having to be living in mainland China, Taiwan, Hong Kong, Macau, Singapore, or Malaysia. Now there are over 1500 students in Miami-Dade county learning Chinese! And there are over 800 members of the Miami Chinese Language Corner!

We are going to hold the July 2018 Chinese corner meet-up/lesson (II) at McDonald on SW 40th Street and 113th Avenue (see attached map). 2018年7月份的第2次中文角活动暨中文课将在西南40街及113道的麦当劳举办（见所附地图）。
All of you, including your family, your friends, you acquaintances or your students are welcomed to the free event for fun in practicing, improving, learning Chinese and getting some Chinese cultural exposure!
