Hi,

A long time ago, I had heard talk of a town called Hell, MI.
I have two questions to ask:

1. Is this place a tourist trap?

2. If so, are unique items offered for sale at any shops?
Put another way, is there more available in the town than
coffee mugs and t-shirts that have puns on them?

yours,

Michael.

It's been years since I've been out that way, but I think it's
still a very small town. Just one store that sells a few weak
joke items, such as the t-shirts and mugs you mentioned. They
also had a U.S. Post Office, so you could get a letter or
postcard postmarked from Hell.

In other words, not very much to recommend it as a destination of
its own, but it might be worth a visit if you were already
in the area.

Nope. It's so small you won't even know your there. If you see a bar called
the Damn Site Inn you are in Hell.

I haven't even seen that although they probably exist.

Also has an official weather station. I think the bar there is the Dam
site not Damn site (there is a dam across the hell creek river near
there). It seems the tourist trap / sovenier shop also has a catchy
name but I can't remember it (well, maybe its not that cachy). I lived
in the area most of my life but never went inside.

If memory serves, there is now a big beautiul sign saying WELCOME to HELL.
Created by an ad agency for a car(?) commercial. Donated to the municipality
<snork> after filming.
And the PO/store/tourist trap has a large sign painted on one outside wall.
That might be worth a photo on your visit...esp in January...

Just got back from a trip to Hell (among other places) and was disappointed.
The place is miniscule, consiting of basically a party store (overpriced caps
and average priced T-shirts) and the restaurant, where I had one of the best
Reuben sandwiches I've been served anywhere - good thick slices of corned beef
and justthe right amount of tart sauerkraut. My wife had a burger and said it
was really good too.

The town isn't much, but it's a good place to eat.

As a kid we would camp at Crooked Lake, hike along Shit Creek until
we got to Hell, MI. Then return to our campsite.

You guessed it! We hiked to Hell and back.

The sign at the entrance to the city was a gift from BBDO and it had been
used in a Jeep Cherokee ad.
The city is nothing to write home about, but just as I suspected, some of
the nicest and most fun people are in Hell!

On the contrary, I would write home about it. Hope the urban sprawl does not
get to it. That alone in Michigan is something!!!! Agree with nice people
statement and the fun is not to be topped. The Damn Site Inn has shown our
group many smiles, good food & the DANCING...Wow..fun, fun, fun.
Great bands..Pizza...Laid back country...
Now under new ownership...hope they keep close to the same as it was.
Sometimes fancier is not better. Especially in Hell....
Too wordy I know...but love this place.
****Maybe yes, maybe no,****quite contrary
