I have a Sony 585 hi-fi vcr. We bought it about 2.5 years ago, and
it's started to have serious problems with audio flutter and video
shake on SP recorded tapes. It seems to be better with EP tapes.
I took it to Ann Arbor Electronics, and got an estimate of $90-100
labor and $80 parts.
They said there were two separate problems - (I may get this wrong,
because I don't understand the workings of vcrs)
The clutch system has to be replaced. He noted that the reel 1
pulley is slipping, and the tensioner bar was vibrating.
He also noted that the capstan drum was touching something other part
resulting in a scraping. He couldn't verifiy this for sure, but he
noted that there was some plastic washers that tended to fail in the
early units that were later replaced with stronger washers.
He noted that it looks like the system got a lot of use, which is
true. Typically 3-5 hours per day in recording and playback.
In any case, I think I want another opinion - nearly $200 seems like a
*lot* of money to put into a vcr that was bought new for $500 2.5
years ago.
Any advice or opinions?

I have had good results with Accutronics. They are downtown on State
Street next to the Espresso Royale Cafe. Prices and quality of repairs
are good. Other friends that have used them have complained of having
to call them to check on the readiness of orders. I've not had that
problem. They have worked on two of my VCRs and my home CD player all of
which are still in service. The downside is that they are not in a spot
convenient for parking. Nothing like having to lug a VCR through Nickles
Arcade from the Maynard structure...
