I apologize in advance for the cross posting. The Detroit Java User
group has two great meetings scheduled to kick
off our 2011 season.

Both meetings are free and open to the public, but please register.

February - Building Cross-Device Apps with Flex and Spring presented
by James Ward of Adobe

Creating Beautiful Android Apps Easily with Nick Kwiatkowski
On January 18th the Detroit Java User Group will meet for a workshop
called Creating Beautiful Android Apps Easily with Nick Kwiatkowski.

This starts at 6:00PM. The registration page is,

Abstract: Today’s world demands that you not only have an online
presence, but you also have an online app to help your company or
service be found. Creating mobile apps is a brand new world for
many, many developers and UX designers are just getting their hands
around
what is required to make it flow. Nick will show you how to use a
chain of Adobe applications that you may already have such as Adobe
Catalyst, Adobe Device Central, Adobe Photoshop, and Flash Builder to
create beautiful, functional mobile applications that you can sell
or promote at Android Marketplace.

Nick Kwiatkowski is a telecommunications engineer and manager in the
Telecommunication Systems Department at Michigan State University.
He is responsible for the Telephone and Cable TV networks on campus
(his
department also handles the Fiber Optics, 2-Way Radios, Cellular and
licensed Wireless on campus). He also runs the Michigan Flex Users
Group and is an Adobe Certified Professional for Adobe Integrated
Runtime for both desktop and mobile devices. Nick has spoken at
several conferences including Flex Camp, 360/Flex and the Lansing day
of dot net. He has also been a guest on several Flex and Cold
Fusion podcasts. Nick presented this talk as a workshop at the
Michigan
World Usability Day in Lansing. He blogs at http://quetwo.com/

Building Cross-Device Apps with Flex and Spring presented by James
Ward of Adobe
On February 15th Detroit Java User Group will be meeting for
Building Cross-Device Apps with Flex and Spring presented by James

Ward of Adobe. This starts at 6:00PM. The registration page is,
http://detroitjugfebruary2011.eventbrite.com/ (This one might sell
out, so people should sign up soon.)

Abstract: Users now want apps in the browser, on their desktop,
phone, tablet, and TV. Reusing code across all of these devices is
now crucial for developers. By combing Flex for the UI with Spring
and Hibernate for the back-end, developers can build apps that work
on a variety of devices including PCs, Android phones / tablets, the
Blackberry Playbook tablet, iPhones, and iPads. This session will
walk developers through the steps for creating these cross-device
apps with Flex and Java.

James Ward is Technical Evangelist for Flex at Adobe and Adobe’s JCP
representative to JSR 286, 299, and 301. Much like his love for
climbing mountains, he enjoys programming because it provides endless
new discoveries, elegant workarounds, summits and valleys. His
adventures in climbing have taken him many places. Likewise,
technology has brought him many adventures, including: Pascal and
Assembly back in the early ’90s; Perl, HTML, and JavaScript in the
mid ’90s; then Java and many of its frameworks beginning in the late
’90s.

Today he primarily uses Flex to build beautiful front-ends for Java
based back-ends. Prior to Adobe, James built a rich marketing and
customer service portal for Pillar Data Systems.
