Dear mHealth colleagues,

I was just wondering if any of you have any projects in Salima? UNICEF will be shortly implementing a mobile project with HSAs there and it would be good to make sure its aligned with other activities.

Also, to help the community build the list of projects, feel free to add yours using the google form here, and you can see all the results of this in the google spreadsheet here.

Any thoughts or feedback are most appreciated!
Best regards,
Kieran

Hi Kieran,

The Knowledge 4 Health project was active in Salima last time I was in Malawi, but as you've probably heard the Management Sciences for Health Malawi office is closing and I'm not sure about the future of this project. Some of MSH's mobile projects are transitioning to JSI.

Thanks for creating the google form, I'll add Medic Mobile projects in soon.

cheers
Isaac

Hi Bernadette,

There are three projects that I'm aware of:
  1. MSH & Medic mobile were doing the Knowledge 4 Health project, collecting HMIS statistics (i think) from HSAs

  2. UNICEF - just last month we trained and deployed 'RapidSMS 4 Nutrition'  basically trying to collect growth data from U5 clinics (see attached).

  3. COOPI are doing some interesting work with tablets reporting aggregate facility data remotely.
I hope that helps,
Best wishes,
Kieran

Dear Kieran,

Thank you very much for this info. We (IICD and CORDAID) are about to start 5 projects in which mobile phones will be used to facilitate the reporting needs of HBC workers as well as improving referral to health facilities and getting feedback form health facilities. We will start with these basic application but we are hoping to expand next year by including HAS’s. Hence my interest since we are still in the phase of investigating how exactly they operate in relation to HBC and how ICT may assist.

With Kind Regards

Bernadette

Dear Bernadette,

That sounds like a great initiative, do let us know if you have any further documentation on it.  I think at our last mhealth group meeting we definitely identified the need to collaborate and coordinate more, so we'd be very keen to link our services  where ever it can make sense.

One thing perhaps worth sharing, is that at our last district-wide training in Salima, we introduced the concepts 'Mobile Champions' and 'Mobile Agents". Very simply Mobile Champions are the (usually district or zone level) staff that we did the training-of-trainers with to be the frontline education on the mobile tools and provide initial support. Mobile Agents are simple existing HSAs trained on some mobile theory and then in the mobile service we provided.

We did this hoping that the role (probably 'qualification' is more appropriate) could be something that goes beyond this individual project - e.g. if our various projects come together to see what are the various tools, projects and theory that these two initial roles need we could keep adding to the single body-of-knowledge for that role. I had hoped this would make sense as the various projects usually end up fighting over the same human resources. I hope that makes sense.

Best wishes,
Kieran
