Coffee and Comics: A visit to “A Bintel Brief: Love and Longing in Old New York”
Sunday, April 12, 3 PM
Spertus Institute Vestibule 610 S. Michigan Ave, Chicago
If you’re interested in Yiddish, Jewish history, or comics, come join this program. We’ll look at Spertus’ exhibit of “A Bintel Brief: Love and Longing in Old New York,” an interpretation of a Yiddish advice column into comic format (description below). We’ll then go to a cafe to share our thoughts and read some of the poignant letters that the comics are based on.
As the 19th century drew to a close and the 20th century began, a surge of Jewish immigrants arrived on American shores. Struggling to assimilate to the ways of their new world, men and women shared their personal hopes and fears with Abraham Cahan, legendary editor of the Jewish Daily Forward and creator of its enormously popular advice column. The column was called A Bintel Brief — Yiddish for “A Bundle of Letters” — and it spoke with unparalleled immediacy to both the humor and heartbreak of the immigrant experience, from family squabbles to crises of faith.
Talented young cartoonist Liana Finckhas brought these letters to life in her book, A Bintel Brief: Love and Longing in Old New York. Spertus Institute is pleased to present a selection of her illustrations, sketches, and etchings.

Two Days, One Night
Sunday, April 19, starts at 3:15 PM, meet at 3 PM
Gene Siskel Film Center: 164 N State St, Chicago
In Two Days, One Night, Marion Cotillard (from La Vie en Rose and Inception) plays a young wife and mother who has a nervous breakdown and is required to take time off from her job at a factory. While she’s away, her co-workers discover that they can do her work collectively and all receive bonuses. When she realizes that her job no longer exists, she spends the weekend trying to convince them that she deserves to stay at the factory. Come see this limited-release film (French, with subtitles) with us and join us afterwords for tea and discussion. RSVP to Eleanor for a subsidized ticket.
Shabbat Lunch

Moishe House Rogers Park (RSVP for address)
We hear Shabbat lunch is the new Shabbat dinner. Come on over for a low-key afternoon of eating and shmoozing. Heck, maybe we’ll even sit outside if it’s nice out! It’d be great if you could bring along a vegetarian dish or dessert, and maybe even a friend who hasn’t been to Moishe House before.
Trip to the Chicago Botanic Garden

Meet at Moishe House Rogers Park (RSVP for address)
Spring is here, so let’s stop and smell the roses (and other flowers) at the Chicago Botanic Garden. We’ll take a stroll through their 26 gardens and learn a thing or two from our resident plant enthusiast, Amir. RSVP to Eleanor to coordinate rides from Moishe House.
