Bonjour Théo,

It'll be amazing if we finish translate Firefox OS 2.x in Malagasy. I put some persons in Cc if they're interrested to contribute to make it happens.

I have some suggestions :
- do you have a clear howto in French to help a new comer ?
- is it possible to upload by default finished French .po files if translated texts are empty ?

Thank you.

Regards,

Hi Thierry,

I'm Théo Chevalier, an intern at Mozilla in the localization team and French localizer as well.
I'm sending you this e-mail because you were involved in Malagasy localization and we have a possible partner interest in shipping Firefox OS (recently launched in Madagascar) in Malagasy. We noticed some recent activity in Firefox OS mg localization http://mozilla.locamotion.org/mg/firefoxos/ (maybe it was you?). We were wondering if you'd be interested in localizing Firefox OS?

We might have an opportunity to ship Firefox OS in Malagasy if the translation of 2.2 version was complete by the end of September. Do you think it would be doable? Do you know anyone else that would be interested in doing that?

Let us know, we'd love to add Malagasy to the list of supported languages!

Cheers,
Théo

Hi Théo,
Me I am Fagelot. I already created an account on locamotion. My username is Fagelot if you can proceed for my next step.
Also, I just want to clarify my case that either English or French would be fine for me but I prefer to have both so a large overview of the signification will have the most accuracy (this is only for my case and I hope my friends have the same opinion as mine).

Many thanks,
Fagelot

Hi,

(+ adding Andri Maholy as I've been told he might be interested in localizing Firefox OS as well)

Thanks everyone for your answers, it's really great to see motivated people :) I'll try to cover here the initial questions and give you guys a bit more details to get you on board.

*How to translate*

Sign up on http://mozilla.locamotion.org, then send me your username and you'll be able to submit translations on this project http://mozilla.locamotion.org/mg/firefoxos/

If you don't have the permissions to translate strings  (e.g. if you can only make suggestions), please send me your Locamotion username so that we can give them to you ASAP.

*Schedule*

At this time, you can't really tell whether the translation could be done by the end of September, but maybe in a few days/weeks it will be easier to tell since the main variables are: how many people will work on it, and how much free time you guys have for this project. So, after having taking a look at the repository, if at some point you feel confident to answer this question, let us know if you can or can't meet the deadline, so that we could work on another strategy with the partner for this release. Note that end of September is a tentative deadline that needs to be confirmed, it could change in the future.

*L10n documentation*

We don't really have relevant l10n documentation in French related to Firefox OS as I do it alone and work directly on Mercurial with a text editor. But I'll write one that works for you and could be used by other teams as well (i.e. African languages where people speak French).
Initially, I think it will cover:

- How to handle placeables (variables)
- How to handle plurals
- How to get translations from all locales for a given string
- How to use Transvision for QA checks

I'll try to put that online next week.

*French translations*

I assume you request is to display French translations as a suggestion so that you can get inspired of it to translate into Malagasy, not to display to the user a UI with translations in Malagasy and a fallback in French when there is no translation?

We don't have .po for French, but here's the final French translations for Firefox OS 2.2 in .tmx file format:
https://transvision.mozfr.org/downloads/?locale=fr&tmx_format=normal&gaia=gaia

You can probably load the translation memory in several tools.
For OmegaT, we have a dedicated file available: https://transvision.mozfr.org/downloads/?locale=fr&tmx_format=omegat&gaia=gaia

In any case, you can search for strings in Transvision. Here's an example of search query for “update” in Firefox OS 2.2 strings. On the right column you can find the French translations:
https://transvision.mozfr.org/?recherche=update&repo=gaia&sourcelocale=en-US&locale=fr&search_type=strings
I use it all the time to check how I translated a word previously and make the translation consistent.

For French, I don't work on Locamotion at all, but I'll check with our team if it's possible to update this repository http://mozilla.locamotion.org/fr/firefoxos/ so that you can have suggestions from French directly on Locamotion. I'll keep you posted on this.

In any case, don't hesitate to contact me (in French if you prefer) if you have any question or trouble to translate Firefox OS. Even if you have questions like “Where is this string used in the UI?” “What's the context?” “What does it really mean?”, etc. I can probably help there.
Also, we will probably be able to send you a few phones to test your translations in a real context.

In the meantime, feel free to ask if you have any questions!

Cheers,
Théo
