Hi there,

Please help - I have no idea what I did wrong. The validation step had no problems (apart from taking several hours to complete), but when I did the aligning, I received the following message in a .txt doc in my output folder:

The following exceptions were encountered during the ouput [sic] of the alignments to TextGrids:
DonovanS:
TypeError: join() argument must be str, bytes, or os.PathLike object, not 'list'

Any assistance will be appreciated, thanks!

Keep well,
Yolandi

Hi Yolandi,

I just encountered the same error, maybe the solution that I found can help you, too:

Is there also a line "Traceback (most recent calls)" somewhere above the line with your TypeError message? Then the problem might be coming from previous alignments that you performed before loading in the data that you wanted to process when the error occurred. Go to your documents folder (i.e. C:\users\yourname\documents in case you are using Windows), there you will find a folder for the MFA with a temporary directory that contains information from previous runs. Delete these documents (or at least the sub-folder that is related to your previous run). This should do the job.
I think that in my case, the problem was that all files have the same names for each participant. There seems to be a traceback that the MFA can't deal with.....

Hope this helps.

Best,
Marie

Hi Marie,

Oh my goodness, THANKS SO MUCH!!!

I did what you suggested and deleted the content of the folder created by MFA in my Documents (turned out to be the folder with the same name as my input folder). When I tried the aligner after this, the result was beautiful, aligned TextGrids in my output folder!

I cannot tell you how happy I am for your help – I had to use another Praat script to chop up my data into utterance level .lab files, which worked with the aligner, but the file names of the aligned TextGrids got changed, so I had to waste a lot of time finding a solution for this – i.e. fixing the TextGrid filenames so that they’re the same as the .wav, because my analysis scripts won’t work otherwise...

And this morning, just before I saw your message, I was even trying to install ProsodyLab Aligner on my Windows PC out of desperation...

Again, thanks so much for taking the time to write your message and for your willingness to help – you have made my week!!!

Good luck with all your work!

Keep well and have a good weekend,

Yolandi
