Hi there,

I recently updated from Mojave to Big Sur 11.4 on my desktop and am now getting an ‘IndexError: pop from empty list’ error with MFA 2.0:

(aligner) Eleanors-iPro:~ eleanorchodroff$ mfa align --clean ~/Desktop/test/ ~/Documents/MFA/pretrained_models/dictionary/english.dict english ~/Desktop/test_output/
All required kaldi binaries were found!
Cleaning old directory!
/Users/eleanorchodroff/Documents/MFA/test/align.log
INFO - Setting up corpus information...
INFO - Number of speakers in corpus: 1, average number of utterances per speaker: 120.0
IndexError: pop from empty list

The exact same files and configuration on my laptop (Mojave 10.14.16) run fine.

I've now updated Xcode, tried pulling the most recent release, and then also tried fully reinstalling it (though didn't really go through any steps to uninstall it...). Same error. Has anyone else encountered this particular index error / any ideas how to fix it?

Thanks!
Eleanor

Problem solved! The dictionary hadn't downloaded properly. Once I re-downloaded, it worked fine. Note to self: a --debug flag exists and is very useful

So the next update should have a better middle ground, I had suppressed stack traces to make the MFA errors a bit more clear what was actually going wrong and how to fix it, but not having the stack trace for unexpected errors leads to users needing to rerun with --debug.  The debug flag will still output more debugging info (i.e. how long things take, random stuff that usually gets logged to the log file and not the console), as well as producing intermediate textgrids during training, but it won't matter for expanding errors in the future.
