Does anyone know how to install a Samsung CLP-320 printer on a MBP running Monterey? The Samsung printer drivers don't seem to work for Monterey and the Universal version doesn't work for the CLP-320.
However, I know it can work as I have a MBP 2015 updated to Monterey and the printer works fine. I have had this machine a while so when the drivers were installed it would have been on an earlier macOS version.
Do you have access to an older PC? If so, you could try to download and install an appropriate (free) Desktop version of Ubuntu on that machine, in order to make it a print server. There are Samsung CLP-320 drivers for Linux (Ubuntu) from HP. Ubuntu is using CUPS. A printer (such as the CLP-320) could be connected to a USB port on the Ubuntu PC. Then this printer could be configured to be shared (only a few steps). An Ubuntu PC can handle Bonjour (mDNS/Avahi), and a shared printer should thus be recognised by Mac computers on a network. Connect the Ubuntu PC via Ethernet to the network (one of the LAN ports of a Wi-Fi router) and try to print from the new Mac. Would this work?
You could also try to set up USB printer sharing on a Mac running an older version of Mac OS X/OS X/macOS, and connect that computer to the network (if possible, via Ethernet to one of the LAN ports of the Wi-Fi router). Then check what happens if you try to print via the network from the macOS Monterey Mac (check whether the printer appears as a Bonjour printer in the Print dialogue).
I have a Samsung CLX-3185FN (part of the CLX-3180 Series) printer. It was working fine on my MacBook Pro running macOS Big Sur 11.6.4, which has been upgraded over several years through successive macOS versions.
In addition, the download on the Apple website Samsung Printer Drivers v2.6 for OS X (AU) for "Samsung Printer Drivers v2.6 for OS X" gives me the error message "This volume does not meet the requirements for this update", same issue as @drfunkuk.
I have another, older Mac running Catalina. I tried navigating to /Library/Printers, copying both the PPDs and Samsung folders from there to my MacBook Pro, resetting the Printing System from System Preferences, and then adding the printer.
Now, the driver is found by macOS - but I get an error upon adding the printer that tells me "The software for the printer was installed incorrectly", which persists regardless of whether I re-run a reset of the printing system or a First Aid in Disk Utility to fix permissions.
It is ridiculous that this printer worked perfectly fine on Big Sur before I wiped the hard disk, it works perfectly fine on Catalina currently, it works fine under Windows... but not on a fresh install of macOS Big Sur.
Thank you for the information. Actual drivers inside a package may or may not work with a modern operating system, but one problem can also be the installer itself and its system version detection. Unfortunately, a mere transfer of printer driver components from one machine to another is often not feasible.
It is really not acceptable that a printer is prevented from working with a new computer just because of the way the operating system was installed, especially not when the same printer could be used with an earlier computer model running the same operating system version. It ought to be possible for a computer manufacturer controlling the operating system to facilitate continued use of existing printers. Not all printers are AirPrint-models. A computer buyer cannot be expected to throw away older, functional printers.
This printer is the world's most beautiful, I believe. I was searching for any replacement with this feature set, but did not find any comparable model. All just look too much office style. So, I am happy that it's still working. I did replaced the LSU modul in the printer 2 years ago, as it was not working. I hope will work for another more years.
The last printer driver issued for the SCX-4500 was for OS X Yosemite in 2017. That driver would clearly be incompatible with Catalina or Big Sur. There is no support from Apple's AirPrint for this device either. No one else makes a driver for this HP device, and there is no universal driver for that reason.
Apple decided to make the laser printer Samsung CLP 360 series dysfunctional over a night. No drivers provided for this model that can work with macos Big Sur anymore. CLP-360_Series_Mac_PrinterDriver_V5.02.00 were working fine with macos X 10.15 during the installation through Bonjour. But now they are not available anymore. I installed them by myself but the system can't detect them. So the printer is not working.
Apple is not an island. Users do not work in isolation with their apple products. It always takes two to tango. Both companies are responsible to support their users by resolving problems and not creating further ones. It seems that designing new sound effects for every interaction was their higher priority...
Apple is not responsible for third-party printer drivers. That is HP, who now owns the Samsung printer business, and may choose to prioritize newer printers for Big Sur support over older printers, and some printers will never receive newer drivers. Take that up with HP.
In order to rule out a hardware or software problem related to USB, it is sometimes interesting to carry out alternative tests with a network. Unfortunately, the M2020 is USB only. Do you possibly have access to an Ethernet-to-USB (or Wi-Fi-to-USB) print server, or an AirPort Express (or perhaps another router with a USB printer port), that could be used for an experiment? I say experiment, because the printer is probably not tested to be compatible with many such devices and macOS (but a Samsung Xpress SL-M2020 is at least mentioned in the TP-Link list at -link.com/2020/202004/20200430/PrinterCompatibilityList_20200430.pdf).
The idea would be to try a procedure similar to the Add a network printer by its IP address section in Add a printer on Mac - Apple Support. Also, see the How to install compatible driver section in -en/document/c06520117 in fine.
You are correct. The vendors must work together and most of them do. Apple had advised HP well in advance of the specific technical requirements of the upcoming Big Sur operating system, so the requirements were well known by HP. If HP declines to support Apple's customers, that is on them. Apple does not, and can not write printer driver software for the thousands of printers out there around the world since they do not own or have access to the proprietary software code of each printer model. It is unfortunate that you have to have this experience.
I have a suggestion which may help you. Check the link below where volunteers have written code for many older models of printers which the vendors no longer support. There may be one that works for you.
When u shut down and open later the Trash has files in it. ALL THE TIME. There is nothing in these empty files. Desk top picture disappear also after shut down. Our Aurora 3d animation does not work at all. And we were thinking of a new $6,000.00 mac pro. Our late 2013 (ours purchased 2014) we are editing gurus. Apple upgrades are becoming like Microsoft. Every new upgrading breaks more than it fixes. my computer has become super slow and yes the 2 samsung printers i have couldn't be accessed and scanner didn't work till i figure out this shared on the network feature
I have the same problem with my EPSON XP 200. printer. Apple doesn't mention this when it invites you to update. Just install our fancy upgrade which makes your peripherals unworkable. The incompatibility is then your problem
Hi to all of you Mac geeks in Apple land. Big Sur update did nothing for the Mac Pro. (i movie update) Same problems. Mac Pro will not recognize Epson printer. Sometimes when shutting down, Mail opens and U have to force quit?. When we power up, the trash has (old news ) recovered files in it which are empty files. Photo quits unexpectedly?. Still NO
I have the same issue and can't use my printer with M1 silicon Macbook Air. It is a shame, printing technology is very old in IT and should not be an issue to have driver compatible at a time where we can execute any technology on any platform with such easy way. Special red lanterne to HP where you can't even open an incident ticket since first step is to give HP serial driver (but it is a Samsung printer bought by HP). HP also don't have such forum/blog like Apple. Apple did help me and tried to fix it over the phone (almost 2 hours).

I have been fiddling with debian based dist on servers for several years but not on the desktop. For servers is sort of the best solution but on the desktop ?
On the desktop I'm starting to hate it.
Nothing is working out of the box. My first fight was how I should connect to my ms machine at work. I wanted a better experience then you can have with vnc so I started to test several other solution. Was fighting with splashtop for a long time but ended up in Remmina (rdp).
