Mew hanging at creating SSL/TLS connection when trying to load new mail

Hi All - I just upgraded from Ubuntu 14.04 LTS to Ubuntu 16.04.3 LTS, and now when I run Mew in Emacs (version 23.4.1) it hangs with the following message after I try to fetch new email:

Creating an SSL/TLS connection...

If I control-g and try again, it hangs with the same issue.

I am running Mew version 7.0.50 which I installed around 2010, though after looking at the documentation on the Mew webpage I see the current version is at 6.7.  So perhaps I should re-install with that version.

If anyone has any suggestions, would be much appreciated.

Hi All - This problem has something to do with configuring stunnel4 (which was also updated, to v.5.30) to work with an exchange mail server.  Does anyone have an stunnel.conf file that they can post which works on your system?  Or does anyone have other suggestions?

On Ubuntu 17.04 (and 16.10), stunnel (5.39) plus mew (git version)
worked out-of-the-box without tweaking the
configuration, but I have not tested it with an Exchange mail server.

I may try updating to the latest Mew version in git, to see if that helps. But I would like to get it working as-is first, to avoid losing my messages if possible.

We did figure out how to get stunnel4 working with the mail Exchange server, but I am having trouble now translating the settings into Mew. It looks like I need to update the mew-ssl.el and .mew.el files with the correct stunnel4 settings.

Can I just have .mew-ssl.el grab the settings instead from the file /etc/stunnel/stunnel.conf, which already has all of the correct settings?

If anyone has any suggestions on this, would be much appreciated.
