Dear Hope Tanker's:

We were gifted with these beautiful writings about Gandhian economics by a fellow named George Mokray. Please consider reading them and possibly discussing them in your circles of activism, not to mention, hope tank.

Michael Nagler wrote this op-ed a few months ago on the application of Gandhian ec. in our current crisis.

Best wishes, Stephanie

To All...
Here's my vision.
Here's what I want to do.

Michael

THE GREENING OF PALESTINE

An unnamed source tells me the greening of Palestine will shift
the global perspective toward peace and lead directly to ecological
and economic rescue for the world. The same source says not to appeal
to Israel for water but to appeal to global ingenuity to find cheap,
Earth-friendly technologies for desalinating water...to bring it in
from the sea. Appealing to those involved in the wounding keeps us
from the healing. The same source says...

“Where am I not O Israel? What hand raised in anger
is not raised against me? Is it in destroying your brother's house
that you find me, or in building it up? Is it in uprooting his orchards
and ancient groves, the trees he loves, that you find me, or in
planting and tending them by his side? Is it in building walls
that you find me? Always on the other side of the wall you build,
find me there. Put your brother not down but meet him at the gates
of Jerusalem. Lift him on your shoulders and carry him to his
holy place. Unless you are gathered in a vision of peace,
how are you not at war with yourself? Feed not at
the breast of contempt O Israel. Its milk is not nourishing.
Neither is it sweet. Lowering your hand, remember
I am not a stranger to your soul.”

Create a provocative and interesting peace or inherit war by
default. To the ends of the Earth we will be visited by war drama
after war drama...until we enact a global peace drama that is
interesting enough to hold the global attention long enough to
reeducate that attention out of the black hole of adversarial
passions, into the open fields of non-adversarial studies. The theater
of global events asks to be taken by surprise by a non-adversarial
drama that takes a step beyond the theater of the expected. Palestine
is the fulcrum for shifting the global perspective toward an effective
strategy for moving us into a healing economy. Predictability on the
global stage can become an abuse, even a treason. 'The predictable'
cannot awaken the kind of attention in us that has to be awakened to
carry us into a healing space. Water for Palestine is the first step.
Gandhi started with a march to the sea to separate salt from water.
Imagine the drama of thousands marching to the sea with shovels to dig
inland channels to let sea water into inland reservoirs to begin
desalination processes. A blossoming of the desert speaks to Biblical
prophecies that are more friendly than other prophecies now bidding to
purchase our destiny. Meeting with individuals, groups. Call.
Let's talk.
