Amazon Fire Tablets restrict you to the Amazon Appstore, but they run Fire OS, a custom version of Android. That means you can install Google's Play Store to gain access to millions of Android apps and games, including Google apps like Gmail, Chrome, Google Maps, and more.

The best part of installing the Play Store on your Fire Tablet is that it doesn't require any in-depth "hacking" like rooting or running scripts from a PC. It's just a matter of downloading and installing a few APK files from the tablet itself, and you'll be up and running with the Play Store just like your regular Android phone or tablet! Let's get started.

To find out which Amazon Fire Tablet model you have, go to Settings > Device Options > About Fire Tablet. You'll see your "Device Model" name here. To see your Fire OS version, go to Settings > Device Options > System Updates.

With the device model in mind, we can download the appropriate files below. Simply copy and paste the links from the tables below into the Silk Browser on your Amazon Fire tablet. We're just downloading the files at this point, don't open them yet.

APK Mirror is a trusted source for downloading APK files. However, some of the ads on APK Mirror are deceptive. Look for the "Download APK" button (shown below) that has a file size. The color of the button will match the app's icon. You should also see a "Verified safe to install" message near the button.

It's important to install these APKs in a specific order. For each APK, follow this process: Tap the file > select "Continue" > tap the "Install" button. After it installs, tap "Done." Don't open the Play Store yet.

If you're using the Fire 7 2022 (12th Gen) or a newer Fire tablet running FireOS 8, you may need to manually grant permissions before using the Play Store. Tap and hold the Play Store icon and select "App Info."

In our most recent testing, it was not necessary to manually grant permissions on the Fire 7 2022 (running FireOS 8.3.2.3. However, if you run into issues, we've retained the instructions below for you to try.

After following the above instructions, open the Play Store from the home screen and sign in with your Google account. Once you're signed in, you'll have a functional Google Play Store, just like on any other Android device. Go forth and download Telegram, Chrome, Gmail, and any other app you can't find in the Amazon Appstore.

It's possible that future Fire OS updates may break the functionality of the Play Store. If that happens, we suggest going through the entire install process again and checking if newer APK files are available. If all else fails, you can reset your Fire tablet and start over.

You may experience some problems when trying to use the Play Store right away. The Play Store and Google Play Services will automatically update themselves in the background, so just give it some time. This may take as much as ten minutes.

No. While it is frustrating and time-consuming, the easiest way to restore things is to factory reset and then try again from the beginning. We have a dedicated guide for factory resetting your Android phone here.

The Google Play Store is only half of the equation. You also need to obtain Google Play Services for your device. Almost every Play Store app, including the Google Play Store, uses Google Play Services. Without one, you cannot have the other. Unfortunately, getting everything up and running is an exceptionally difficult process. We have a dedicated guide for this.

To install the Play Store manually, download the Google Play Store by going to a reputable site like APKMirror and get the APK there. Then, install the Play Store either using a file browser or APKMirror's proprietary installer app (available in the Play Store).

This is the easiest and most efficient way to get the latest Google Play Store version. Generally speaking, it should be up to date all the time since it does update in the background. However, this is the easiest method to make sure.

Finding a good Android tablet is tough, especially if you're on a budget. Companies like Samsung and Lenovo do their best to convince would-be iPad buyers. Still, no one in tech can beat the bargains found in Amazon's Fire lineup. Amazon has updated its entire lineup of Fire tablets with improved performance since 2022, alongside introducing its premium Fire Max 11. But specs are only part of the equation. Without better software, these slates are as good as useless.

Getting the Play Store on your Fire Tablet is easy. This guide takes you through every aspect of installing Google's app store on your device, with instructions for models dating to 2014, up to and including the latest Fire tablets. If you get stuck, take a deep breath and step away for a few minutes. Then, skip to the end of this post to find solutions to common problems we've noticed.

You'll need to activate the apps you want to install from outside the Amazon Appstore to get started. This action allows you to open and install applications from downloaded APK files, which is how you'll get the Play Store running. Only download apps from trusted sources, as sideloading is an easy way to subject yourself to vulnerabilities. We'll install from APK Mirror, a trusted source for APKs across the web.

On older models running legacy software, activating Apps from Unknown Sources might be a single toggle, not a per-app choice. This removes the third step above. Turn on the permission in step two to continue. Now, you're ready to download and install the APKs needed to run the Google Play Store.

The next step is to download the proper APK files for the Google Play Store. You will install four applications: Google Account Manager, Google Services Framework, Google Play Services, and Google Play Store. The first three apps handle basic account services and add APIs, while the last app is the store.

Because different Fire tablets run different versions of Android with varying hardware (ranging from Android 5 to Android 11), the exact APKs you will install depend on the Fire tablet model. If you're unsure which model you have, figuring it out is easy.

For the Google Account Manager and Google Services Framework applications, find the appropriate links for your device from the table below and tap the main Download APK button on the linked page. If you have your Fire tablet generation in hand, figuring out the correct version is easy.

It's important you do not open the files just yet. There are a few more steps you need to complete. If you see a message about a newer version being available, ignore it. The tablet keeps the apps updated after the installation process is over.

You're halfway done. For these last two applications, click the link for your device, then select the version closest to the top of the list that doesn't have "beta" in the name. Again, don't open the files and ignore messages about newer versions being available.

5. Open the apps in the order shown below. When the installation is complete, tap Done. Do not tap Open. The Play Store will not work if apps are installed out of order. If you have an SD card, take it out during these installations.

7. After installing the four apps, hold the power button and tap Restart to restart your tablet. Older tablets might only have the option to power off. If so, let the tablet shut down, then press and hold the power button to turn it back on.

8. After your Fire tablet boots up, open the new Play Store app from the home screen. From there, the Play Store asks you to log in with your Google account, after which you can download and install apps.

Amazon updated its Fire lineup with two new tablets in 2022: the Amazon Fire 7 and the Amazon Fire HD 8. These devices feature improved performance, new colors, and, in the case of the Fire 7, USB-C charging for the first time. However, installing the Google Play Store seems to be an issue. At launch, neither device seemed capable of running the Play Store, even when following the directions in this guide. This concerned us, but it looks as though whatever issues were here are now fixed.

The 2022 Amazon Fire 7 was the first device that gave us issues, but after updating to Fire OS 8.3.1.3, it seems these installation problems are gone. The Play Store started right up, and we could log in to an account in a minute or so. We can also confirm YouTube runs properly, suggesting any bugs have been ironed out. To add credibility to this, users on Reddit see similar results, just as they did with the Fire HD 8 after that device received an update.

When we updated this guide in May 2023, the most recent version of Fire OS for these two devices was Fire OS 8.3.1.8. We factory reset the Fire 7 and re-performed the steps above, and everything is still working as expected. If you have trouble, make sure your tablet is up to date. It could be the difference between accessing the Play Store after 15 minutes and spending an afternoon with non-stop headaches.

After you've found an app that you want to use, you need to add it to your store. You can either install it from the Shopify App Store or with a third-party install link. If you want to install a custom app, then you need to use the unique install link provided by the developer.

Third-party install links only work for apps created before December 5, 2019. If you click a third-party install link for an app made after that date, then you get an error message in your Shopify admin and can't install the app.
