There are two General Board of Discipleship courses that meet the
Discipline's requirements: "Lay Speaking Ministries: Youth Basic
Course", and "Lay Speaking Ministries Basic Course". The Discipline
doesn't differentiate between youth and other professing members of
the church, so either course is acceptable for anyone. Both are good.
"Lay Speaking Ministries Basic Course" is more academic, usually
delivered in 5 2- to 2.5-hour sessions, usually on a weekday evening
over 5 weeks. It can also be done as a 13-week Sunday School Series,
or three longer classes on a Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday morning.
"Lay Speaking Ministries: Youth Basic Course" is more social. Personal
witnessing is emphasized over preaching. Facilitated discussion
sessions interspersed with short readings, skits, and music are the
norm. It is usually delivered as a 10-hour Saturday retreat, but can
be done as a series of shorter sessions. Circuit 36 had great success
offering it as 4 breakout sessions on successive Saturdays meeting at
each of the participating churches independently, followed by a single
plenary session on the 5th Saturday meeting at Pewaukee. On the
breakout weeks, one church per week was assigned to make a lesson
video and post it on YouTube.
