You may definitely deliver a class. Any one who can follow a book can
facilitate a class using a General Board of Discipleship curriculum.
Those with any teaching experience, including children's Sunday
school, are invited to do so.
We aren't limited to GBoD curricula, either. If you know of a good
class on Robert's Rules of Order, for example, that might well qualify
as an advanced class. The Conference Committee on Lay Servant
Ministries is considering much more broadly defining acceptable
courses, by rile rather than list, to include things like the Disciple
series. That also means that courses offered by other agencies might
well qualify. School of Christian Mission courses, if they are
(currently) at least 10 hours long, qualify as advanced courses.
College courses in an appropriate subject would qualify. Karen Klatt's
advanced preaching course is a condensation of a course taught at
Garrett-Evangelical Theological Seminary.
You may definitely design a class. As we Rethink Church, we will need
to do this much more. New models of evangelism, outreach, and worship
will require training. You might not want to design from scratch,
though. UMCom has online courses that could stand alone, and some the
would be good core components with supplementation.
While this post applies to any Lay Servant, it most particularly
applies to those who are already in Christian education, and
especially to those who are Directors of Christian Ed. Shall we get
organized as a group, even if only informally? Maybe a picnic or
something?
If the Holy Spirit is calling you to teach, I will help you in any way
I can.
