All, the first design patterns study group is scheduled for Wednesday,
April 11th at 6:00 PM. The location is Royal Oak public library. We
have reserved a large conference room in the library that can
accommodate 20-30 (possibly more) people.

The group organizers met last week and we've decided to initially
focus on a particular book, "Refactoring to Patterns" by Joshua
Kerievsky.

This book not only teaches design patterns in depth, it also applies
them in the context of refactoring, which is the best way to learn
patterns. You basically are presented with a particular design
scenario and proceed with evaluating the design, deciding on it's
drawbacks and applying various refactorings until you achieve a
particular pattern reification. Patterns are also groups and applied
as a design solution to a particular problem. This is a unique
approach which teaches real-life pattern applications to hopefully
minimize over engineering which so many of us do in the process of
learning patterns.

We'd also love to hear real life examples of pattern usage/design
scenarios in our discussions, so bring your stories:-)

Everyone who will be attending, I'd love to get an attendance count
before the meeting, so just reply to this email with your plans.
Also, if you have any comments/suggestions, we'd love to hear them.

Thanks.

I'll be there for sure.

BTW, I found this great cheat sheet: http://industriallogic.com/papers/smellstorefactorings.pdf

Goes well with the book.
