I'd like to organize an informal preliminary meeting between the
interested parties in this groups. This will allow us to meet and
discuss the groups issues, like organizing meetings, agendas, times,
locations, etc... We can also take this opportunity to personally
meet everyone.

I propose next Wednesday at 6:00 PM. We should probably meet at some
coffee shop, or any such place that has enough room for us to gather.
I know Panera, Starbucks, or other places usually have adequate
room/environment for such a gathering, but I'll let you decide.

Since I work from home and don't have to undergo the headaches of
daily work commute, the location is irrelevant to me (willing to
travel:-). So I'll let you guys propose the location.

Thanks.

Hi Ilya,

I am concerned that my lack of OO knowledge and experience will put me at a disadvantage and slow down the group. Obviously it is not my intention to cause any frustration to the group. Would you give me an idea if we individuals of a more novice nature will have a place in the group?

As a reference point to my current experience, I come from the world of Coldfusion and Oracle and am diligently teaching myself Java via the following books:
- Agile Java: Crafting code with Test Driven Development
- Agile Java Development with Spring, Hibernate and Eclipse

I have a small 600 hour project coming for which I am considering using the Google Web Took Kit and NOT Coldfusion. Also, I find myself in the middle of a job search and at a great disadvantage in that I do not have great depth in Java or .NET.

Anyway, sorry to be long winded. Let me know what you think

Thanks,

Ed, you definitely have a place, as does anyone willing to learn and
contribute. I think this will help you in many ways, as you learning
java, to learn it the right way. Basically, with the emphasis on OO,
Patterns, Refactoring, and TDD, this group would be a definitive place
to start learning such concepts, which you'll be able to apply to any
programming environment, whether it's java, c#, ruby, python, etc...

We'd love to have you.

I can pretty much meet any day except Friday, but definitely prefer the 'after work' weekday times. So the 6:00 on Wednesday works for me.

Troy is a pretty central location; thoughts?

Wednesday's good for me, as is any other time/day, probably. I
telecommute as well, and am willing to travel anywhere.

My from-the-hip suggestions are Novi or Royal Oak -- both are very
commercial areas that seem to be equidistant for a lot of
metro-Detroit. My company has a nice conference room that could most
likely be available for evenings, but we're in Ann Arbor which probably
isn't a convenient distance for many of you.

Jim, awesome. Do you know any place in Royal Oak where we can meet?
A coffee shop/panera, or similar? This meeting will be pretty
informal and so far about 5 people said they might attend. I want to
make this a meeting where we discuss the future of the group and set
up an agenda to go forward, etc... People that show up will help in
running the group, etc...

Let me know.

Ilya
