Fish gills are not only the respiratory organ, but also essential for ion-regulation, acid-base control, detoxification, waste excretion and host defense. Multifactorial gill diseases are common in farmed Atlantic salmon, and still poorly understood. Understanding gill pathophysiology is of paramount importance, but the sacrifice of large numbers of experimental animals for this purpose should be avoided. Therefore, in vitro models, such as cell lines, are urgently required to replace fish trials. An Atlantic salmon gill epithelial cell line, ASG-10, was established at the Norwegian Veterinary institute in 2018. This cell line forms a monolayer expressing cytokeratin, e-cadherin and desmosomes, hallmarks of a functional epithelial barrier. To determine the value of ASG-10 for comparative studies of gill functions, the characterization of ASG-10 was taken one step further by performing functional assays and comparing the cell proteome and transcriptome with those of gills from juvenile freshwater Atlantic salmon. The ASG-10 cell line appear to be a homogenous cell line consisting of epithelial cells, which express tight junction proteins. We demonstrated that ASG-10 forms a barrier, both alone and in co-culture with the Atlantic salmon gill fibroblast cell line ASG-13. ASG-10 cells can phagocytose and express several ATP-binding cassette transport proteins. Additionally, ASG-10 expresses genes involved in biotransformation of xenobiotics and immune responses. Taken together, this study provides an overview of functions that can be studied using ASG-10, which will be an important contribution to in vitro gill epithelial research of Atlantic salmon.

Dr. James Gill, a Clinical Lecturer at the University of Warwick and a practicing GP, will attend a pivotal event hosted at the House of Lords on Monday (April 29) focused on combating the global crisis of antimicrobial resistance (AMR).

Antimicrobial resistance poses a formidable threat to communities worldwide, with projections indicating that by 2050, over 10 million deaths annually could be attributed to AMR, surpassing even the toll of cancer. In the face of this escalating emergency, effective communication is paramount. Health professionals and organizations play a crucial role in disseminating accurate, accessible information to raise awareness about critical health issues such as AMR.

Reflecting on the significance of the event, Dr James Gill said, "Antibiotics have been perceived as magic bullets, capable of swiftly addressing various ailments. However, their indiscriminate use poses significant risks, both in terms of adverse effects and the development of resistance."

Partnering with The Fleming Initiative, YouTube Health will collaborate to amplify awareness of this pressing global concern across social media platforms. Under the patronage of HRH Prince William and the leadership of Lord Ara Darzi, The Fleming Initiative represents a transformative alliance of policymakers, scientists, and behavioral change experts committed to combating AMR.

A fundamental shift in patient perception is imperative. Rather than viewing antibiotics as a panacea, patients must understand the potential harm associated with their misuse. Empowering patients to question the necessity of antibiotics and fostering a dialogue on appropriate usage is paramount in addressing the challenge of AMR."

While physicians are well-informed, there exists a pressing necessity to re-educate patients on the nuanced impact of antibiotics. Rather than viewing these medications as mere symptom alleviators, patients must understand the potential long-term harm, including disruptions to their gut microbiome and the development of antibiotic resistance. Dr Gill underscores the importance of fostering a shift in patient mindset, wherein individuals actively engage in discussions with their doctors, questioning the necessity of antibiotic prescriptions and considering alternative approaches.

By enhancing patient awareness, Dr Gill envisions a transformative outcome wherein patients adopt a more discerning approach towards antibiotic use, ultimately contributing to the collective effort in combating antimicrobial resistance.Dr James Gill, a Clinical Lecturer at the University of Warwick and a practising GP, will attend a pivotal event hosted at the House of Lords on Monday (April 29) focused on combating the global crisis of antimicrobial resistance (AMR).

Shreyas Iyer claimed that the partnership between Virat Kohli and Shubman Gill was of paramount importance for India during the first innings against Sri Lanka during the World Cup 2023 on November 2.

The duo added 189 runs in just 179 deliveries, showcasing their exceptional batting skills. Gill delivered an impressive innings, scoring 92 runs off 92 balls, including 11 boundaries and 2 maximums. However, he fell short of his maiden century in the World Cup by a mere 8 runs. On the other hand, Virat Kohli contributed with a solid knock of 88 runs off 94 deliveries, which included 11 fours. Despite his remarkable performance, Kohli fell short of reaching his 49th International century.

Their partnership was marked by excellent chemistry and complementary batting styles. They took calculated risks, found gaps in the field, and kept the scoreboard ticking. Both bat reached their respective half-centuries, further strengthening India's position in the match.

Speaking at the innings break, Shreyas said that the surface was good to bat on. The Indian batter said he tried to settle first and then go after loose deliveries. Shreyas heaped praise on Gill and Kohli's partnership and said it was a importance to the side as it set up a platform for the side.

"I think the surface is pretty good to bat on. The ball was coming on at invariable bounce. I settled first, and then I went after the loose deliveries. That was my plan. The partnership between Shubman Gill and Virat Kohli was of paramount importance. Their running between the wickets was brilliant. KL Rahul and I got a message that the ball was holding on a bit, so we had to adjust our shots accordingly," said Shreyas.Published By: alan johnPublished On: Nov 2, 2023Read More: IND vs SL, World Cup 2023: Virat Kohli misses 2 hundreds in span of 3 matches, falls for 88 in MumbaiMust Watch
