methadone take-home bottles

I recently moved to Northern VT and continued my daily meth treatment
at a mobile meth clinic here..was happy to find one up here.
At one of the mobile locations, the doses are prepared ahead of time
in take home bottles, and the dose is administered in the "mobile
unit".
I recently discovered from the dosing nurse that these bottles are re-
used daily. !!
This doesn't seem to be good medical practice; not even sure if it is
legal, reusing a one time serving device, which restaurants are even
prohibited from doing.
Since moving here, I have been plagued with colds, sinus infections,
and other common maladies---- haven't had a cold in years and i dont
have much contact at all with people here.. could be a change in
location but....
Could i be getting sick from contaminated bottles.?
Im afraid to complain to authorities; if ths prog gets shut down,not
good for me. Any ideas?

Wow. It's shocking to hear of a clinic re-using their dosing bottles... They are certainly NOT sterile and intended for a ONE-time use. They're DISPOSABLE plastic bottles! AATOD has put out some statements on things like adding water to takehome doses (after so long, maybe a week?, mold & stuff can start to grow precisely BECAUSE they're not sterile containers), etc. but I'm not sure if actually RE-USING the bottles has ever been addressed? I know that some clinics (most of the CRC Health Group-owned clinics) require you to return the bottles and then they are sent back to the bottle manufacturer for them to sterilize and recycle the bottles.. but that's totally different than re-using them! This just blows my mind... Did you ever figure out anything? I would think about contacting the North Eastern representative for NAMA (www.methadone.org) and checking with them... or maybe the Vermont SMA? At my clinic we don't have to take our bottles back at all... In what other medical treatment, receiving what other medicine, would someone have to keep up with and be expected to return their empty medication bottles?? Let ALONE have them RE-USED?! Ugh.....

We pushed the issue with the state health officer who questioned the director of the clinic , who responded that he wanted to talk to us, because they would never do this !!!.. The dosing nurse told us they were reused.They put up a sign for awhile to be sure that returned bottles were clean? We never called the director for fear of retribution from the nurse,

The bottles were always filled out of sight and prior to medicating  and we also suspect the doses were being shorted.

We didnt want to press the issue because we KNOW the clinic nurse would take retribution, we saw this occur with others wjho caused problems, by refusing to dose for crazy reasons.. There are "small people " here who get off on controlling others lives.

At other programs we have been to prior,doses and bottles were always measured out in front of the client.

Anyway, they denied it and the nurse clammed up..

That's unfortunate when patients are scared to stand up for themselves & their rights for fear of retribution. In advocacy that is something we run into on a regular basis. It is important for patients to KNOW, though, that it is a violation of federal regulations for a program to act or react in a retaliatory way... So if there WAS any retaliation or retribution then they would be in even MORE trouble. But that's definitely something I would want to know about too - especially if more frequent sickness, etc. was being experienced since attending that particular program! Ugh....
