Meteor App Suddenly Extremely Slow to Start

Twice in the past two days, my app has become extremely slow to start. 

It hangs for a minute or more at the ==> Starting your app... message. Once it loads and is served on localhost, it performs normally.  

Yesterday, I thought I fixed it by deleting and recreating the database. Today, I came back from lunch and it was suddenly slow again. I'm at a loss as it doesn't offer any messages that could help debug it. I've disabled all code that runs on startup, but that hasn't made a difference. 

I'm wondering if anyone else has come across this? I'm running 0.8.3.

Perhaps a better question is: 

Is there a way to view non-error log output during start up - between "Started your app" and "Your app is running on..."? A more verbose debug mode?

Is there a better way to tell what processes are slowing the launch during this period?

I can also duplicate this slowness when creating a fresh meteor app. 

I create a new meteor app (meteor create foo) and run it -> it starts normally

I then  - without changing anything else - add accounts-base and accounts-password and it hangs for 30 seconds to a minute at start.
