You might be aware of this project, but I just bumped into it myself -
very similar in concept to MXP, but of course there are differences:

My understanding is the developer of verse protocol is not exactly good at sharing information.  I saw a demo at the GDC back in 2006 or 2007 at the khronos booth but it really did not gain any traction.  Think we are also comparing apples with oranges.
