I talked to some of the folks behind X3D the other day. They are very
interested in exploring a combination of MXP as transport layer and
X3D as content layer... which would give us a complete solution based
on open technologies.

What do you think??? I'm psyched about the potential.

Hi Ben,

That idea has brilliant potential. How would we proceed with exploring this path?

I don't know of any good open source virtual worlds that use x3D

I believe 3DXplorer is based on x3d and java they announced voice last week.  So no download and its browser based.  Its a basic world engine no avatar customisation or physics etc but not bad.  It is closed source.

Tony parisi developed a virtual world in flux it was supposed to be an open source virtual world engine but he never released the source code.  They received 9 m in funding and then 2 months ago ran out of cash.

I think X3D has everything needed to define a simulated 3d space and
the things in it... but their current paradigm is of course a
"document" paradigm, based on the existing "web". This does not
provide the interaction and efficient, granular network communication
necessary for an immersive virtual world. The missing piece, IMHO, is
MXP.

Thanks for bringing up 3DXplorer; we should contact Darius Lahoutifard
and extend the invitation to add MXP. 3DXplorer has a lot of
potential as it runs in the browser but still uses OpenGL (I think
it's JOGL they are using?).

Of course, whether we get participation of closed-source products or
not, I believe we should forge ahead... we have MXP libraries in
multiple languages, and a working hub; if we are able to decide on a
content layer what remains is building or adapting one or more pieces
of client software. Perhaps the "viewer" that Web3D/X3D already has?

Tommi I'm going to start an email thread with you and the X3D folks I
met, so we can coordinate a conference call. Then when we talk
hopefully we can figure out how to link our respective communities up
for broad participation.

HI all~

We look forward to working with some MU tech this summer!
I am interested in your assessment of what it would take to share X3D
between bubble clouds!

what would a development roadmap look like?

note also that the DeepMatrix code has recently re-emerged!
